Canada tried in the 70s.

Nobody's really done a whole country all at once. It's always been pilot programs that didn't need to be sustainable.

edit: looks like Finland tried it more recently, same general results as Canada in the 70s.

The problem with "social dividend" systems, is that they turn disastrous when whatever resource vanishes or tanks in the market.
This is what turned Venezuela into a hellscape, or at least accelerated the process.

The left is already critical of UBI.

How many countries have tried Ubi at this point? I know Canada and Finland both had experiments that they canceled because the results weren't good.

It it will be interesting to see this implemented on a nationwide scale, but I'm not holding my breath for it to work any better than any of the other attempts.

I mean you wouldn't see negatives or positives with stupid ideas like supply and demand suddenly don't apply to rent and groceries.

If someone overprices then no one would rent or buy from them.

If anything, a nationwide program will definitively prove its ineffectiveness and unsustainability, at least until cries for a global UBI starts up.

Or, it'll actually work somehow, and show the rest of us how to get the math right.

Let's take a look and see what happens. I'm writing my prediction in an envelope, right here:
Massive wealth flight and even more poverty than before

i'm not disputing this - subsidizes inactivity, after all; potentially disastrous multigenerational consequences as well

UBI isnt really a left vs right issue. You get people attacking or defending it from both right and left viewpoints.
You get people on the right who think that if you are going to have a welfare state, then getting rid of all existing programs and implementing UBI is the way it should be done due to greatly reduced administrative costs and a streamlined bureaucracy. People on the left who dislike it tend to do so because they are worried that would happen.

if they have a choice, then you're right. but that isn't always the case. monopolies exist. food deserts exist. artificial scarcity exists.

Which has really been the fundamental flaw of Ubi implementations to date. When you create a new safety net that still requires all of your old safety nets you haven't actually fixed anything, you just dumped a bunch of money on people who, historically, don't use it the way it's "designed" to work.

UBI is very much a neoliberal solution to problems caused by capitalism. there isn't an actual left-wing case for it outside of like, potential temporary harm reduction.
