Because its 100% going that way right now. If schools open, there will be MASSIVE teacher shortages...making the whole situation an even bigger disaster.

What do yall think is gonna happen?

I already know it's happening. Schools are letting students opt out to online still if they're not comfortable going to class in my state. What's Trump gonna do? Lower their fucking salaries? It's already an insult and you'd have no teachers.

Fire them. There's a shit load of college graduates with degrees in education who would bite your arm off for an indoor, part time job with a full time salary and benefits for life.

No. Thats overall school funding, which will make teachers jobs even harder, having less resources for the materials they need in order to do their jobs.

Teachers already barely get enough funding and salary. Its disgusting.

Some areas will go back to school.
Lots of teachers near retirement will choose to retire.
Some teachers will switch careers.
Some areas won't go back to school.
Lots of teachers will go back to school.
There will be more learning from home.
There will be more homeschooling.

The bottom line to all of it is that US education will continue to suffer.

Both your parents are teachers? That's cool. Now you have to realize that your parents work part time jobs funded by the taxpayer, and we expect them to get back to work, or they don't get paid. I don't pay my taxes so that other people can sit home and not work. "Hurr, stay home, save lives!" Sure, if they want to stay home, they can forfeit their salary.

If teachers want to stay home, they shouldn't get paid. Just like everyone else. If you don't want to work because you're scared, that's fine, but don't expect to be collecting a pay check. What's unfair about that?

Teachers don't work part time, but yeah I can't imagine someone isn't trolling by saying to replace teachers with all those numerous education majors who are forced to work outdoors full time and are desperate for a job inside in the career field they majored in that is pretty easy to find jobs in. Just lazy trolling.

Realistically if I want to keep my job I'll have to be at schoolbat least every other week. Seems like our district is headed towards A and B weeks. A are in school, B are virtual.

so do you think parents are ok with that? Are the kids? Will kids even go back? Im sure a lot wont want to. I know there are a lot that miss it, but I also know there are a LOT of kids who absolutely despise the traditional school system.

Parents want to go back for the most part. Younger kids as well. Not sure about high school aged ones.

I think if we do open like 90% would show up

except parents dont. Looking at polls in my city, and the vast majority of parents dont think its safe. Cases are spiking like crazy across Texas.

There wasn't even enough subs prior to covid. Last year I had classes of 35-40 like 12 times because I have to cover a sick colleague and bring half their class into mine

same with my district. We were always short subs. I had to cover other classes on my off period multiple times the last few years

I think the craziest thing is no one really has a plan yet on what to do if an outbreak happens in a school. Do teachers get paid medical leave if they quarantine? Do they have to use up sick days? Do kids get to miss penalty free? theyre letting it be up to the school districts to decide, but most districts are too scared to currently make any decisions, and school starts in like a month or so in most places.

I honestly would be shocked if they do ask us to return to classrooms, only because most of our parents have told us that they want to keep their kids at home for their safety. In fact, I had parents freaking out a week before we closed, telling me that they were so worried about their kids taking the bus and being exposed to the virus.

In the case that they do ask us to return in person, I fully expect another school closure almost immediately.

BTW, I'm starting to get a lot better at lesson planning for online lessons. They're not perfect obviously but you can do some fun things online, lol. I'm currently teaching summer school online and it's been an absolute joy.

Thats a good point. If almost no kids are going back...what would be the point of sending teachers in person though? I think a decent district wouldnt risk their teachers like that. Hopefully.

I teach band, and its been a huge pain in the ass teaching online. Fine arts are NOT meant for online learning or teaching.

My wife is a teacher, she absolutely loves her job and district but has been considering quitting because she is terrified of going back in September. The concern is that we have a very young child at home this puts at risk.

however we do need her income so we are kind of at a loss of what to do. It has been very hard at home these last few days, we feel like the govt is forcing her to risk her own family.

Of course the government is forcing her to risk the lives of others. Because in the eyes of the government and duncan, dollars > lives, and if some old geezers can make a few more dollars then they will sacrifice any amount of lives.
