I've had a few friends lately basically inferring that they feel like Conservatism is basically akin to hating human life and looking only to better themselves and white power all over the world.

... it is odd as a left wing person to defend Conservatism and what it ACTUALLY is (ie: not white power) to fellow left wing people.

The thing is, we don't label politicians as conservative based on their espoused values, they define themselves as conservatives and the definition of Conservatism becomes what they embody. Currently, conservatives in the United States deny the institutional disadvantages faced by black people by centuries of slavery, Jim Crow, and unfair banking practices, deny that the poor deserve help from welfare, deny women autonomy over their own bodies, and promote the expansion of the (white) establishment's power by eroding the separation of church & state, shutting down affirmative action, and funding the military industrial complex such that we continue to intervene with and destabilize foreign countries in the name of (white) American business.

I mean, during the last election the Conservative leader refused to condemn racist, homophobic and sexists remarks made by various members of the Conservative party. Theres also this;

from just a few days ago. You can maybe say conservatism as a concept isnt racist or homophobic, but theres really no way you can say the Conservative party or many of its voters arent racist or homophobic, as their actions clearly say they are.

Stating that conservatives are not unanimously bigoted is not the same as defending or promoting conservative values. It's merely seeking the truth. Taking a side on an issue does not mean everyone on the other side is the worst of the worst. Those kinds of generalizations are the very foundation of bigotry itself.
