This phrase gets over-used a lot, but it really seems to me like a "When all you have is a hammer" scenario. Going straight to threatening to pull or a gun, or actually getting a gun, is such a quintisentially American thing, in a way that only a non-American can really appreciate.
So what do non-Americans do...? I mean if you feel threatened, you have just seconds to react. You can't rely on the timing of the police (hell, there are protests right now against how poorly the police treats the public they're supposed to protect; I find it funny that these same people protesting the police are the folks saying "call the police!").

Nah, just stating the facts from what I perceived based on my recollections. And you're clearly trying to rile me up, buddy.

Again, this is so hard to explain to an American because the mindset elsewhere is just so different. It's genuinely difficult to get across another countries' perspective. And I'm not even trying to be condescending or mean when I say that. It just is.

This. I'm Australian, if I thought someone was in my apartment, I'd grab something heavy and try to crack them over the head to knock them out. If they were trying to break into the front door, I'd go to the door and open it. I wouldn't assume they were armed or anything like that.

Why would you open the door to someone who is trying to break in? And, I'm not sure what country you're in, but in America, a lot of criminals have guns. There's certainly no shortage.

Whether or not people agree with guns, the cat is certainly out of the bag, so to speak, regarding guns in America. Criminals have them. Law biding citizens have them for protection.

CE I tell ya...

He had the right to get the gun. The man was pounding at his door, and apparently just drove off, meaning he knew his "friends" houses wasn't near. Hell, the man probably saw the gun and backed the fuck off because of it.

He couldn't see it. But I was talking to him with the door partially ajar with the right hand side of my body concealed and the pistol in my right hand, so he reasonably could have assumed I was armed.

But yeah, it was really fucking weird. I kept my blinds open the rest of the night to see if he drove back by but never saw his car again.

The employee should definitely have left the home after being asked, but to go from asking someone to leave straight to pulling a gun on him? Wtf is that.

Um, you at that point, things have gone into a gray and uncertain place. You don't know if you're dealing is a psychopath as any normal person would vacate the premises when asked to do so.

I'll tell you a flip side of a story like this, and I know this person.

College kid got black out drunk, it was a house party that was couple of blocks from his condominium. His ride ditched him that night so he said fuck he'll walk home. Got home and tried to get his key to work but it wouldn't.

Bam! Bam! Bam! Three shots through the door and the kid woke up the next morning in the hospital with cops next to him, asked him why he was "breaking into someone's home." He explained what happened and the cops realized the kid wasn't breaking into anyone's home, he got drunk and mistakenly went to his neighbors door. The cops immediately went to arrest and charge the neighbor. Kid is luckily to be alive because the one bullet that hit him was an inch from his heart.

So you walked up to your friends house that you've never been to and instead of knocking you just try and open the door to let yourself in?
im sure this has been discussed before but why does this shock you? people let themselves in at friends houses all the time. In fact, I once used to live in a Condo with a gated back yard. My neighbor was moving and the way those condos were laid out, not every house had the gate and you had to go all the way around to get to the others. People were helping them move and they mistakenly walked into my gate and started grabbing stuff out of my yard, presumably to load it into the neighbors truck.

You know what i didn't do? instantly assume they were trying to kill me and grab a gun. I just walked outside and said "who the fuck are you guys?"...They looked surprised, apologized, neighbor came over and told them where their stuff was. we all had a good laugh.

Dude. That's different.
Why the hell would people stealing your stuff want to kill you? Then they wouldn't steal your stuff, just go and try to kill you. Then steal your stuff.

I'd do the same thing.

I've had people come onto my porch in the middle of the night and it has scared the fuck out of me.

I called the cops but it took them 10 minutes to get here and the police station is 4 fucking blocks away.

This was the same time that people we're creeping around other people's houses in the middle of the night.

I have a gun but i wasn't going outside til the cops got here but it happened again and i wasn't waiting for cops because they're fucking useless in this town. The person was already gone when i got out there but someone down the street because the person was on their property. This shit went on for 2 weeks, every other night. Cops didn't do a damn thing.

Taking all the arguing aside that topic turned into, this reminded me of a story of my own. When I was in college, me and my roommate got back to the dorm room on a Friday or Saturday night after going out with a group of friends. It was like 2AM, so we went to bed. About an hour later, theres some loud banging at our door. Were both half out of it, but we go and see who is there.

It was some dude that was hammered and was convinced that this was his room. We actually lived in what was at the time (dont know if it still is) the largest dorm building in the country, so there were 25 residential floors, each looking identical. He just was on the wrong floor, but goddamn, it took some convincing to get his drunk ass to leave. After getting him to tell us where he lived and telling him he was on the wrong floor, he left... for about 30 seconds. He then started pounding on the door again and was getting a bit more hostile about us being in his room. I mean... we were never in any danger by any means (2 vs 1, were sober hes drunk, etc), but it was just annoying to get this dude to leave.

I'm aware. The gun wasn't even the point of the topic. It was just my dismay at this dumb weird guy that tried to walk into my house while we were eating dinner.

But I should have known mentioning the gun would just trigger a bunch of idiots who would pretend like I walked outside waving a gun around like a lunatic.

Had something similar happen at our apartment when I was in college. Was hanging out with my roommates and a couple of friends and a random girl who was completly trashed came in our apartment and wouldn't leave. We tried to find a way to get her home or get someone she knew to come and get her but she was completely incoherent and didn't even have a phone or purse. She went into my roommates room and refused to leave so we eventually just had to call the cops to come get her.

I felt bad, but we couldn't just throw her out to fend for herself in the state she was in and didn't know what else to do.

Sometimes I imagine this American habit of leaving one's front door unlocked stems from a (possibly subconscious) desire that someone might try to break in, so that they have an excuse to use their gun.

To those people, try viagra. I hear it's more effective.
