Reagan didnt see a reason to care about something that didnt affect him until his friend Rock Hudson was revealed to be suffering from AIDS-related illnesses.

He commented when the majority of people decided to give a fuck. Which was when white middle class subarbanites started getting it. Before that it was mostly homosexual men and drug addicts that got it.

Same with the opioid/heroin crisis. It had been going on for years, but no one really seemed to give two shits until middle class suburban teenagers started to overdose.

primarily hit gay and drug addict populations. though what's less talked about is how devastating it was for people that needed regular blood transfusions. hemophiliacs were horribly impacted, and if you needed blood during a surgery during the early 80s you were screwed. and of course, the black population with sickle cell.

I was a little kid in the 80's but from what I understand, the republicans back then considered AIDS like God's punishment on gay people. they did worse than didn't care. they cheered it on

I don't think Reagan deserves unique credit for signing a bill that he initially opposed after it passed Congress by pretty healthy margins.

At the time people were refering to it as "The Gay Plague" and saying it was a punishment from God for being homosexuals.

Reagan was conservative and while he would never wish it on anyone, he and his voter base weren't upset by the fact gay people were dying. The epidemic was only taken seriously when hetrosexual men started dying.

I remember hearing a preist tell me and a group of boys that God made you more likely to get AIDs from gay sex to make you realize that he wanted all men to have hetrosexual sex.

I said that considering the risk of AIDs is lower for lesbians than for hetrosexual sex, does that mean God wants all women to be lesbians?

And he was never seen again

The was a big push during the period to get a universal healthcare system as well. Check out protest videos and you'll see signs saying, "Healthcare is a human right." It's not a modern issue, we just pretend it is.
