i miss when Nostalgia Critic was all about those comical mental breakdowns when reviewing movies instead of recreating scenes from them with those shitty low-budget sketches...

i didn't care that he didn't want to see it. It was just pretty pretentious and weird of him to make a whole video dedicated to telling us he wasn't going to see it. The defense of that was "well he's a big Ghostbusters fan so people would be wondering"...come on, he did it to jump on the wave of attention the movie was getting. just make a tweet. 180 characters would have been enough. Didn't need a monetized video for it lol.

All over a stupid movie. James handled it really well tho, pretty much just dropped the video and ignored all the bitch fits people threw at him and then soon enough people stopped caring. I think the movie coming out and being absolute dog shit helped him a lot as well.

If you watch the video it's mainly building up to the next video he made about the history of Ghostbusters 3 that never was.

And he doesn't trash the movie at all, he just says he doesn't think it looks good so he won't see it.

That's such a dumb reason to be mad at someone, that's true for me and most movies.

I think people were just so eager to find a white nerd to rage about the movie that they could be mad at that they jumped on James Rolfe even though he didn't do any of that.

According to Pat the NES Punk (CREDIBLE SOURCE I KNOW), James doesn't really understand the internet or social media or memes or SJW wars and never even really picked up that people were mad at him.

Yeah James from AVGN doesn't look to be a vocal guy on the web. And honestly I don't think what he did was a big deal. Sometimes you just gotta say enough is enough with these movies. It's not necessarily that female Ghostbusters is the problem. Sometimes you gotta go what's the point of seeing a rehash of a classic? I feel the same way about Jurassic World, but that wouldn't cause a controversy. I could say "screw any new Batman movie, I've had my fill", but that wouldn't be considered a crazy take.

At some point, a person gets to be alive long enough to see the industry for what it is. It's a constant rehashing and remixing of ideas and sometimes I elect to not take part in it.

This is why if I was a personality, Id be a Dunkey, Critical type personality. They seem more so "Fuck you, I play what I want and talk shit, leave if you want something else" l. I can't imagine taking demands from an online community. And I use to think that's the only way the job worked.

James not backing down with an apology video or doubling down with another video really helped him. He didn't stir the flames back up and it all just went away. More internet types need to go that route when faced with bullshit.

Just to add to this, it's worth noting that James didn't make the video to "Take a stand" against modern movies or anything

He did it for 2 reasons.

1. Because people kept asking him if he was going to review it since he's covered a lot of Ghotbusters and 80s/early 90s stff

2. Because he really wanted to do a video about Ghostbusters 3.

People who weren't fans of his didn't get that and thought he was targeting Ghostbusters either for no reason or because of Sexism.

I agree. James has been pretty graceful with his internet fame. I'm sure he's aware of potential missteps. He seems overly careful at times.

Personally, I gave the movie the benefit of the doubt and saw it. I was disappointed with how one-dimensional and bad it was. In the end, it really deserves all the hate it gets.

Most of these guys have film degrees and always wanted to make movies, that's why they do such good reviews of them.

But they don't want to make reviews, they want to make movies. They just suck at it

And I completely agree. The best era was before he started going grandiose and wanted to start acting out roles in scenes. I didn't like it when Doug cancelled The Nostalgia Critic to do Demo Reel, which rightfully bombed. He just put his Demo Reel content into The Nostalgia Critic instead. I have nothing against Malcolm and Tara, but I refuse to watch the clip-less episodes. I wish someone would produce "abridged" versions of The Nostalgia Critic which cuts out all of the dumb scenes.

Its funny in a way, The Nostalgia Critic criticises a movie for doing some dumb lame sketch that halts the progress of the movie, and then does exactly that during his reviews. The Coronavirus has actually improved The Nostalgia Critic by forcing him to go back to basics without all the acting.

I actually really like Malcolm and Tamara as they're far more charismatic than Doug and better. Still won't watch any of his reviews recreating entire movies in shitty scenes. Any review of his that starts with a 5 minute sketch I just skip to whenever the actual review starts.
