In my experience, Alabama

Nobody there seemed happy that a Filipino (me) was in their presence...

That state made me feel very uncomfortable

The only time I ever witnessed explicit racism irl was in Vegas when this schizophrenic chick ran up to a black man & screamed FUCKING [redacted] in his face in the middle of a tangent.

Most racist place Ive been to irrelevant to personal experience was probably rural TN when I was driving from Nashville to Memphis.

Most racism I've had to personally deal with was in a psych ward in NJ. Got roomed with a kid who, if you simply looked into his eyes, you could tell had limited gear movement behind him.

Like, no specific problem that was enough to consider a diagnosis. He was just plainly and purely stupid.

The two people in charge of that wing were black, so he decided he hated black people.

Why would you say those places were racist if you just drove through?

Probably up near DC for me, Northern Virginia area. Boston was bad too the few times Ive visited.

I drove through the heart of South Dallas after I've finished an job early and realized that I had extra time to get a fresh fade for my sister's wedding way later that day.

Immediately I spot some barbershop that wasn't packed and I entered there looking like Dexter during the last scene of the show.

I swear to God, I've never been mean-mugged as much as I did there in my life. Even the children were giving me perplexed stares. One of the barbers even had one of their buddies sit at one of the unoccupied seats, and resumed talking to them like I wasn't around.

I didn't get mad, I simply sat at the chair closest to the door while looking at my work truck to make sure no prying hands were near.

A few moments went by and he says:

"Do you have an appointment?"

I answered that I didn't. I was a walk-in but that I would wait until he was completely done with him. ('-' )

"Well, come up here and have a seat."

I replied, "Thanks."

"So watchu want like a buzz-cut or somethin?"

I go 'Naw, I want a taper-fade with 2 on top, and a 1.5 on the beard.'

He didn't say anythinh after that, and it was a deafening silence for what seemed like an eternity, but only 4 minutes went by.

After a while everyone resumed their conversations or whatever and pretty much stopped giving me looks until my head was done.

I paid and left. Don't remember if I left him a tip or not, but that cut was clean as fuck (I'm talking no missed stray hairs and even lines). I probably did tip.

That was one of the most awkward cuts I've gotten in my life so far.

Just based on reputation. Im not someone who writes off the Deep South or its people generally speaking, but I know racisms still prevalent in many small towns.

But now that you mention it, I have been to Boston... hell, I was born in Edina.

When i was growing up the little town i lived in briefly held the title of hate capital of canada. Lol.

It wasnt really because the whole town was racist though, it was because some guy who ran a huge white supremacist wev site lived there.

I haven't traveled to too many states, but I've been to a few countries.

but anyway, I live around Sacramento, CA, and the most racist place that I've been to was probably further north California.

there's this place where I was waiting for my mom to pick me up after a high school project, and this lady outside of a store told me to stop loitering but backed off after my white classmates spoke up for me.

and this old guy with a KKK tattoo walked past me, but luckily didn't engage me in anyway.

and there was another place further north where a family friend was having a trial, so we went to support him. during recess, we went to a grocery store for some food, and people kept staring at us because we were the only black people around.

I went to check out Voat for the second time ever after the wave of bans on reddit. I wanted to see if the rumors of it being a wretched hive were true. Almost every damn topic on the front page had something to do with insulting Jewish people, black people, or Muslims and there were countless slurs. That site should be nuked from orbit.

In real life, it was rural Tennessee. I went there with a group to go whitewater rafting. They legitimately stared at me like stereotypically racist people do in movies. I have never felt more out of place and in danger in my life. Their eyes and silence were telling me to leave.

I was in a bar in Texas (I am white), hanging out with my peeps, one of them is mixed race: Indian, black, Pakistani, a bit of white, he is got it all. He sort of looks black but he sort of looks Indian too.

this drunk hick in his 50s asks him if he is German (!?!?) and my friend said no. Next thing you know he tells us he hates n-words and s-words and shows up a confederate flag tattoo and tells us that the triple-k is misunderstood. He then starts weeping and tells us that his son is a f-word (slur for gay people).

He follows us across the bar telling us shit we dont want to hear. We all feel in danger. He buys us drinks. Me, being white, tells my 2 minority friends to leave, and I stay with the triple-k f***.

My friends refuse to leave me. We all stay. Triple k begins weeping again. He tells us he is not racist because he is sponsoring (economically) a Filipino kid who will become a tech genius. He starts talking about the kid as if he were his son. Then he calls him a slur for Asians , and then he calls his son the slur for gay people again.

he gets distracted and we leave the fuck out of there.

Louisville, KY. The city has a particularly long history of redlining, segregation and numerous other forms of division and moral deficiency. To this day, one of the most common pieces of advice from locals to newcomers/visitors is to not go "west of 9th" to the (predominately Black) West End. As a result of factors like these, racial tensions in Louisville are sky-high and have been for many years. LMPD's murder of Breonna Taylor has made this more evident to the world at large.

The crazy thing is, Louisvillians act like the city's culture is totally normal and there's nothing wrong with it. Living here, after living in cities that aren't dumpster fires, has felt like a stint in The Twilight Zone. Can't wait to GTFO next year.
