I've never played a God of War game. Would the PS4 game be a good place to start?

It's fine. You'll be missing context for Kratos that is never fully explained in the game, but the story is meant to work even without it. Just know that the game play of the previous entries is very different if you decide to go backwards.

I wouldn't necessary recommend it, but you aren't missing out on a ton by playing it first.

it was my first GoW game and it made no difference

I would recommend just watching the cutscenes of the first games to get some basic context and background information. It would definitely make your experience better for the last game.

If nothing else you may wanna check out a recap of the first several games.

It was the first GoW game I played. There are moments where you feel like you are missing out on something about half way into the game, but really outside of that one long scene I never got that feeling again

you could also watch a retrospective on YouTube, or something.
