With the assumption it's illegal, you can't register or insure a downloaded car. All cops have to do is start running all the plates they see to find phonies, then you're looking at prison and fines for the rest of your natural life.

Consider that you live in a world where something essential like transportation can be mass-produced on a nigh-infinite level with zero cost. The only people who are upset by this are the scumbags who can't figure out how to profit off of it.

I mean, traffic and bad drivers are problems even with the barrier to entry. Giving everybody free cars would escalate these problems considerably and cause more harm than good in the big picture. Is giving everyone personal transportation worth it if you triple commute times and raise insurance rates for everyone?

Nothing's ever so simple.

Downloading =/= creating. And the whole point of the "you wouldn't" video is that everything listed is illegal, so yes it would be illegal for the purposes of this topic.

I thought they were just trying to equate general car theft and illegal downloads in a way they thought was clever tbh. To drive the point that illegal downloads are theft.

(Which of course technically leaves out the fact that there's media that can't actually be obtained legally at all, or even if it can be the people who made and published it won't see a dime of that money anyway.)

Yeah they were trying. Even though theft is physical so they should have just not tried making a bad advertisement like that and focused on copyright infringement.

The only problem is that theft is more well known and understood by basically everyone. They would have actually had to put effort into that one.

The closest analog that is likely to ever exist is downloading the car's schematics and using them to replicate it, which could potentially be considered a copyright violation because you're using the manufacturer's intellectual property in an unauthorized way. Interpreted that way, it's actually already illegal.

This argument seems to hinge on people actually caring about what is and is not legal, which if the events of this year have taught us anything, they don't.

It used to be illegal for black people and women to vote or to drink alcohol. Hell, the law USED to say that black people weren't even people and it's about to give up and say that the only reason it banned hemp in the first reason was because of business interests and not this whole "war on drugs" shit. The law is not infallible and exists only to serve the interests of those who created it. Never forget that.
