Trump tweeting the White power! video was pretty much the last straw for me. Decided to start calling people out on it. Told him the fact that he was still supporting him was deplorable, and that he should be ashamed of himself.

Apparently this makes me the bad guy, though. Am I an asshole in doing so?

Heh, I feel your pain. A couple months ago, my dad randomly told me 'hey, I hope you know that any time you want to talk about politics, we can always have a calm, rational discussion about it.' He's suckered me like this before, and I knew better - he really can't take criticism, and only considers a discussion 'calm and rational' if he ends up winning it - but at that moment I was tired and my guard was down, so I spent a good half-hour tearing apart Trump. One of the gems of the conversation was when I brought up how Trump has no real convictions, and his beliefs sway with whatever headline he happens to hear that day. Dad's gem of a spin on this was 'well I think it's good to have a leader that listens to people around him and is willing to be open to different views.' He also thinks Trump is doing a 'pretty good' job at handling the pandemic, so you can see what an uphill battle this conversation was from the get-go.

The conversation later segued into my humble request that they at least try to deprogram themselves from Fox News. I even said repeatedly that we'd be having this same conversation if they were addicted to CNN or MSNBC, as I consider all 24-hour news networks to be cancerous. But of course he only heard what he wanted to hear out of this, and surprisingly, this was much more offensive to him than bashing Trump.

He stewed about it for a couple days and then laid into me again, starting off with 'I guess we can't have a rational conversation after all if you're going to get angry (I never once raised my voice),' and told me to never again suggest that they stop watching Fox News, justifying it with this notion that he would never have the gall to ask or command me to censor my political views (he has, on several occasions). And then the conversation drifted off into the usual handwaves - I went off to college and got seduced by shallow liberal ideologies, etc. Unsurprisingly, he didn't have an answer when I told him I voted Republican in the two elections after I got out of college. He was also pretty surprised that I flat-out (fake) apologized for bringing up the subject (even though I didn't), and was just as gung-ho as he was over never bringing up the subject again. Like I said, I knew better, and while the years have not been kind to his physical stature, for all of my childhood and a decent chunk of my adulthood, my dad was basically Bill O'Reilly in the body of a professional linebacker; can't think of anyone on this planet who intimidates me more when things get heated.

tl:dr your parents are the hardest people to deprogram their deep-seated political views, because they will never not see you as their uppity rebellious child.

IMO it was an asshole-ish thing to do. Not in what you told him, but HOW you told him. Telling him you don't like Trump or his policies? Fine. Calling him deplorable and saying he should be ashamed of himself? Just childish and rude.

My brother and my dad don't get along in terms of politics, so they just never talk about it. But since you felt the need to incite conflict, you could have at least done so tactfully. Maybe mention the bad things that Trump does instead of resorting to personal insults?

Yeah you pretty much are. No one likes assholes who try and force their opinions on other people. If you want to change someones mind, calmly explain to them why you think they are wrong and provide evidence to back yourself up.

A little paraphrasing here, but I remember someone being interviewed said dont dismiss my lived experience. Ive also heard its my truth and you dont get to tell someone else if they should be offended or not.

Some people will be mad at what you said, but at least youre being honest. You do have to live with whatever the consequences are, though.
