jay leno didn't do anything wrong

he was ready to leave, they kept upgrading their offer until it moved him from 10:00 to 11:30 (it was to be a half hour show). leno said he'd do it (what's he supposed to do, say no?). conan said it would soil the legacy of the tonight show and to keep him at 11:30 or he'd step down....they said it was fine for him to step down and offered leno his old job back. what else was leno supposed to do?

I love Conan, but the thing people ignore in all of this is that Conan got Leno kicked off the Tonight Show in the first place. Leno was number one in the ratings, he was beating Letterman by something like two million viewers a night, and he wasn't ready to retire yet, but NBC wanted to keep Conan happy so they decided to kick Leno off the air in five years. Leno never wanted to go in the first place but because Conan said he didn't want to do the 12:30 slot forever they decided to basically fire him even though he was a ratings powerhouse.

As pissed as Conan may have been, and still is it seems sometimes, he only has himself to blame. If he hadn't forced Leno out in the first place none of this would have happened and he would probably be the host of the Tonight Show right now.

Its NBCs fault, not Jay. NBC gave Jay a 5 year expiration date. When the 5 years were up Leno was still number one rated late host. Conan took over and ratings dropped 49%. They switched to Conan too soon. NBC shouldve stayed with Jay until the time was right.

NBC wanted to put him back in that slot because he whined to them about how he wasn't really ready to step down and he still wanted to host a late night talkshow, so they cleared 5 hours of primetime a week to put him in a new talk show in the 10 o'clock slot, which to no one's surprise didn't go over very well, so they had to do something else to appease him and they didn't really give a fuck about Conan. so, really both NBC and Jay fucked him over.

And Conan fucked over Jay in the first place by threatening to leave. The fact is Leno never should have been kicked off the air to begin with. I love Conan, and wish he would bring his hour long show back, but to act like he is innocent in all this is laughable.

Okay, but Jay didn't ask to be moved to 10, that's what NBC decided. Then his ratings went down at the 10 o'clock spot, and he was beating conan's ratings at 11:30 when he had that slot.

The real truth of it is if NBC didn't put Jay back at 11:30 he would have just gone to another network. NBC didn't want that to happen so the told conan to move back to 12:30 or kick rocks, and he did. I dont really view that as he "whined for his spot back". He wanted to be at 11:30 and if NBC didn't put him there he'd go to FOX. I don't really fault him for that and it was NBC's call at the end of the day.

If anything it kind of helped his career overall. Yea it sucks he lost his dream job, but with TBS he has more control over his content and was able to capitalize off the half hour format/youtube integration a lot easier than he would have if he was forced to abide by tonight show rules.

It's ultimately NBC's fault for trying to have their cake and eat it too. They didn't want a repeat of the Letterman situation, so they tried to create an orderly succession from Leno to Conan. But they also didn't want to lose Leno or Conan to another network and have to give up another slice of the late-night pie.

So in the end, they created a situation that worked for nobody. Leno was unhappy at 10 PM and the show did terribly. Conan was undercut by having his predecessor kicking around and serving as an awful lead-in. And then NBC worsened the situation by trying to walk-back their decision after less than a year, rightfully angering Conan who felt the network didn't have his back (for comparison's sake, Leno did poorly against Letterman for nearly two years before he hit his stride).

The smart move would've been to either cut Leno or Conan in 2009 and put the full network weight behind whoever remained.

I actually saw the Tonight Show with Conan as a ticket holding audience member (got them for free). The guests were terrible though: Bob Newhart, Kay Deeley (I literally went home and googled her after the show, and Ray Lamontagne or more like sea LamonLame.

But Conan and Andy great. The hype comic they got to roast and hype up the audience was cool, but I dont know who he was. The band was dope.

But I honestly dont care about talk show host beefs.

Also this. Conan was never really meant for that show. Tbh late night shows all fucking suck. Conan is the only really funny one in the format these days. Letterman was funny, buy he was old school for me and I'm starting to get pretty old myself.

Are you serious? He owns his own production company. Can do literally whatever he wants in regards to his craft. Has evolved his medium while his peers are woefully behind. Has it set up where he is promoting other comedians shows/acts/etc and giving them a chance to shine.

He is in a far better place than an NBC cog and he knows it.

As for the whole half-hour thing people are talking about, you all know he started out at an hour? And the only reason he shrunk it down to a half hour is because he saw talk-shows were getting old fashioned and he wanted to just focus on a single interview right? And his whole move to online.

As for who was at fault?
NBC for the whole thing.
Jay for being a bitch and not wanting to leave when he promised he would.
I do not understand how Conan is at fault at all. He got pissed that promises were being broken.

Conan is absolutely my favorite, and was the funniest host at the time by far. Leno was always a bit of a snore. But.

He could have done plenty while working at NBC and kept the clout and money and legacy.

No doubts he'd be happier if he stayed at NBC.

On top of that I recall him making a comment about how his biggest concerns at the time was making sure his crew was secure with the move and their paychecks etc. I don't see the change being to his advantage, nor his crew's.

I blame all 3 parties.

With how that company treated him, there is no way he would have been happier. At all. Money and clout is something Conan has never shown to care about. He wants to make people laugh and entertain his audience. The legacy to an extent but he's always held The Tonight Show as something bigger than him.

What are you talking about? The network made promises and broke them to "appease" both him and Leno. Conan was getting screwed every which way. The president of the network was openly critical of him. Leno was pushing himself back into the spotlight. Conan did nothing wrong.

I really doubt Conans TBS show was cut just because its simply what he wanted. I bet it was probably falling ratings.

And if the ratings were falling its because he would waste so much time at the beginning interacting with fans who are holding signs or wearing orange wigs. And in between jokes hed waste time referring to the same audience member. Four or so jokes hardly counts as a monologue.

I love Conan I just hate what his show devolved into over the years before the runtime was cut.
