I have only ever played one Pokmon game ever and I think it was Crystal on GB color. I dont remember much of it either.

But Im bored and it looks pretty. Which one should I get, sword or shield? Any tips for someone unfamiliar with the series?

Honestly. If you have access to any of the GBA, DS, or 3DS pokemon games, go for one of those first.

Sword comes with the sword legendary Pokemon and Shield comes with the shield legendary.

They also each have like 20 unique Pokemon to each game, but if you have an online subscription it's not hard at all to find the ones missing from your game.

That's really the only difference between the two of them.

I got all these Pokemon and I need someone to give them to. Will you take my Pokemon

They dumbed down the game this gen where anybody can breeze through it so the only choice really is to look up the version exclusive Pokemon (won't matter if you have Nintendo Online) and gym leaders and decide which one you want. With experience share not being optional, all of your Pokemon in your party gain experience even if they don't fight. And it's super easy to breed OP pokemon as well

Haha, just that they have extensive (and often overbearing for returning players) tutorials in the last few Pokemon gens. Pokemon is brain dead simple unless you want to go into competitive, where it suddenly becomes pretty complex lol.

After you pick up the game and pick your starter, lemme know and I'll breed the other two for you where I'll leave them in eggs and let you hatch them so that you're their original trainer and not me. Though they will have way better stats than the one you start out with with at minimum 5 IVs (each Pokemon has 6 stats each on a 0-31 scale where 0 is "no good" and 31 is "best", so 5 IVs means 5 of those stats are "best") and their hidden ability, which you can only obtain from catching a Pokemon that already has it and breeding it with a chance that their offspring will inherit it. I could also breed a copy of your starter for you but I think it's pretty common for people to stick with their starter throughout the story because of that bond, and then toss them aside in postgame.

So yeah like Jabodie says, the main story is kiddie stuff but when you get into competitive Pokemon, including breeding, it turns into 5D chess.

Sword IMO since it has better Pokemon IMO

I forgot that also there are like three people you'll meet in the game who would be somebody completely different in the other game; but they would fill the same role, so it's just for show.

I wouldn't do it. I grew up with pokemon and own every game outside of the 3DS run, and they've only gotten worse since gen 3 (except HG/SS, which is the best in the series). The switch game is particularly lazy.

If you want any semblance of challenge then you are going to have to make your own self-imposed rules. My girlfriend has never played all the way through a Pokemon game before, and she beat it with Nuzlocke rules on her first place through. It's one of the easiest games you'll ever play.

My brother in law bought me a Switch and Sword for Christmas because he desperately wanted me to try a Pokemon game and I did and it's not bad. It's easy enough, it can be a good time sink if you have people to raid with online. I put about 200 hours into it and just got the DLC.

It's nothing amazing but it's fun enough and a good time sink.

For what it's worth, I would not pay $60 for one of these games. It's very bare bones in it's combat simplicity. It's about as basic as a turn based combat system can get. I know this will offend some people, not my intent, but it's clearly aimed at children first, and made to be something an 8 year old can beat.

If you raid you will need to remember the type matchups, and if you're a newbie like Cleo then you'll be going into most battles blind because they don't tell you that info until after you beat a Pokemon from that evo line once. Sword and Shield was my first game since Gen 4 (played 5 hours of Gen 5 and dropped it) and having my dragon types repeatedly destroyed by surprise Fairy types was a fun time.

As far as raids, I can't count the number of times in the past week alone I've stumbled into a Zeraora raid and someone had a Mewtwo using psychic moves because I guess they thought it was part Fighting before launching it

Anyway, my enjoyment from Pokemon comes from assembling teams with the stats and moves I want because the story difficulty other than the gauntlet for league members has always been a joke. The last 200 hours I've put in the game has been raiding, breeding, trading, and the DLC.

Oh yeah, you being a Pokemon's original trainer means you can nickname them as much as you want (if I was the OT then you can't change the nickname) and they will never disobey you even if they become a higher level than what your current badge allows.
Sounds good, thank you!

Short answer, yes. Long answer below

Some people rightfully think the expansion pass is a cash grab that should have been included in the base game, but I personally think it's worth it though I am slightly biased since this is my first Pokemon game in 3 generations so I didn't even think twice about preordering it the day it was announced.

With the expansion pass you already get direct access to almost 200 older generation Pokemon in the first of two DLCs, direct access in that you can catch them yourself instead of hoping that you find someone to trade with or join a raid to obtain them. You also get the ability to farm items to Gigantimax eligible Pokemon. Before this new DLC, you could only get Gigantimax pokemon from catching them in raids and you were stuck with whatever stats they had until they were level 100 and you could change them through bottle caps. Now, if you caught/bred something like a Hatenna and raised to a Hatterene, as soon as it becomes a Hatterene you can feed it a soup to give it the Gigantimax form. Before the DLC, I had zero interest in Gigantimax pokemon because like I said earlier, most of my enjoyment from Pokemon comes from raising a low level Pokemon into something overpowered, and not catching it when it's already at level 60.

https://www.fanbyte.com/guides/pokemon-sword-and-shield-gigantimax-guide-which-pokemon-have-gigantimax-forms/

Also be sure that if you do buy the expansion pass and have Pokemon Sword, make sure the one you buy is for Pokemon Sword and not Shield because they are not interchangeable. Last thing is that if you transfer a Pokemon to Pokemon Home (there's a free version) from your game in the next week you can get a free shiny Legendary later on.

I wish there was a Pokemon general though. I've been pretty much giving away Pokemon to anyone who wanted any on Discord servers and the Pokemon board at times, not entirely sure why I enjoy that so much. I think Parappa forgot about the game because I had half a box ready for him when he said he was thinking of buying it lol.

Don't really see the point in buying the expansion if you haven't played the game yet. Play for a few hours, and if you enjoy it, buy it. If not, don't.
