Haven't been wowed with anything so far. It's interesting, but most games tend to be at first glance. I don't know what makes it different enough to warrant the hype.

For most people its just the developer. I just love cyberpunk settings in fiction and this game looks like it has a lot of content so that's why I'm interested in it.

CDPR is definitely a big part of it but the game defnitely seems to have its own legs to stand on. Everyone's a little antsy about how little they've shown over the years but it still looks to be an insanely deep RPG which everyone should be excited about.

The developer is part of it, but I think the setting is also a major part of the appeal.

Its something we've never really seen before for the genre or something that's barely been done. I can't recall any other games that've been an open world RPG with a futuristic setting that have been done to this scale and this much money behind it.

There haven't really been (m)any big budget open world (in a GTA-style city) cyberpunk RPGs. There's also an expectation that the city will be extremely detailed (like a more dense GTA V) and that there will be plenty of "choice and consequence", like in the best RPGs. We'll see whether those things pan out. For fans of the tabletop game, Mike Pondsmith's involvement is a dream too. He seems to have some interesting ideas and a lot to say (he's certainly written plenty about the Cyberpunk world), and that'll hopefully come through in the story and its themes.

I also don't really get the hype even though I'm a big sci fi fan. I know The Witcher series is great and a huge timesink, but nothing they've shown about Cyberpunk has made me go wooooww. And it being a thing for 8 years now (announced May 2012) with delay after delay also causes a bit of concern.

Though even after saying that, it's the only game on my radar for the rest of the year and I'll most likely buy it. But I'm definitely not preordering it

All three Witcher games are great.

That said, 1 and 2 have a lot of jank. It seems to be a thing among some lower budget games from the region.

it's the developer but also the setting. the Cyberpunk setting has been around since the 80s and has had a fair amount of success in the tabletop role playing world, and as such has garnered a passionate following.

Well it's been around well before the 80s with writers like Philip K Dick but the label "Cyberpunk" itself took root somewhere between Neuromancer and Cyberpunk 2020. Which was the 80s.

if i'm not mistaken, you are talking about the genre Cyberpunk. i was talking specifically about the Cyberpunk franchise written by Mike Pondsmith and published by R. Talsorian Games.
That would be Cyberpunk 2020 which I mentioned by name. Cyberpunk 2077 is licensed by the R Talsorian RPG.

Cyberpunk 2020 is the name of Cyberpunk's second edition, and is also what the franchise as a whole was generally referred to by, in order to distinguish it from the genre of Cyberpunk. the Cyberpunk franchise did not exist before the 80s and Philip K. Dick had nothing to do with it, besides artistic inspiration. you seemed to be talking about the genre of Cyberpunk with your claims of it being around earlier than the 80s and Philip K. Dick having something to do with it, neither of which apply to Cyberpunk the franchise.

People had been talking up until now about how there hasn't really been an open world rpg in this genre to this big of a scale. Your other options are all fantasy, space, or the odd unique thing here and there like Fallout or the Outer World's.

Pretty much nobody gives a crap about "The Witcher" setting or at least not prior to the video games. You could have replaced it with any generic fantasy motif and they still would have been great games.

Fantasy as a setting has got people bored and left wanting for something new. I'd be surprised if even 1% of CDPRs fans can name a single canonical NPC from the books. Nobody really cares about "Cyberpunk" the R Talsorian setting, they're here for small c "cyberpunk" the genre.

Deus Ex Human Revolution is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time

If Cyberpunk is that but on a much larger scale with a protagonist as cool as Adam Jensen then sign me up

Watch some videos to learn just how detailed and customizable this open world adventure will be. It hooks you. I suppose if you are not a fan of the genre then it will never appeal to you though.
