I think the deal is that I found what kind of music I like and favourite genres and stick to that, and I keep discovering new stuff on Spotify, so I feel no need to check the current music. I don't even check if the new tracks I find are new or not though.

I don't have the slightest clue about what's popular in music these days. I've never really cared about mainstream music, so it doesn't bother me one bit. I wouldn't say I'm "proud" of that I just don't care.

I stopped following 99% of new stuff since I was like 13-14. I've always been more of a fan of older stuff. I'm not proud of it or write off all new music, but I'm not too worried about it either.

I've always been completely out of touch with music, modern or not. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy music, I just have very specific tastes, and I'm not particularly interested in expanding outside of them.

I've collected random songs and bands/artists over my life that I enjoy listening to and basically ignored everything else. There are probably hundreds of bands and artists I've heard of that I honestly can't name even their most popular song or imagine how it goes, as well as entire genres of music.

It doesn't bring me any pride or shame, music is a secondary interest at best and always has been. I've never owned a device for the sole purpose of listening to music, i've never paid for music, i've never paid to see a live music performance.

I've always been out of touch with music my whole life. Even during the 90s, I really only knew select stuff that other people at school really liked. The only music I actually listen to is game music.

This, I almost always gravitated to older stuff. Who knows, maybe in 20 years, I'll develop a taste for the best of whats new today.

Of course losing awareness in modern top 40 music as you age has been typical for generations. Whats really different now is that the internet has allowed many more musical acts to get some level of awareness with their fanbase and find success, at the expense of less mega-stars who have widespread awareness in society.

I'm not sure I ever had my feet in modern music. My parents raised me on what they liked, ranging from the 1950s rock & roll and 1960s soul to late 1980s AOR and almost every kind of popular rock between those decades sans punk and grunge. I drifted towards electronic genres at a young age, mainly techno and trance, but also dance pop like Eiffel 65 and such. Vice City in 2002 turned my dial hard to the 1980s, and I went on to buy compilations of 1980s music, through which I discovered one of my fave genres: Italo disco! It's like the 1980s sound distilled and refined into its pure essence, and it's oooooh soooo goooood!

Anyhow, ever since the 1980s music got its hooks in me, contemporary rock sounded abrasive, unmelodic, and offputtingly deriative to my ears. Electronic genres were still fantastic, though. Well, not dubstep. That stuff's atrocious. But after 2006 or so, my understanding of mainstream music has become extremely tenuous. I have never heard a Lady Gaga song as far as I know, and rap as whole is meh. Early 1980s rap is my jam, because Vice City.

Lately, I've been exploring music from the 1950s onwards and discovered many new genres: jazz-funk, southern rock, blues rock, dub, rocksteady, western swing, progressive electronic music, ambient, power pop, philly soul etc. In doing so, I've heard a lot of quality music that seemingly never cracked the top 100 or has become undeservedly neglected despite its popularity back in the day.
