My cynical take is its going to run like butt on PS4/Xbone and they don't want those versions out there as the console standard while waiting for next gen to launch.

like for real just make a game that's good on launch, delay it for a year if you have to, there are dozens of great games every year

i hate how devs have to put out long letters about this because they know they are going to get twitter bombed by angry nerds

To be clear I'm not complaining a out the delay, the longer they push it back the better. CDPR isn't Bethesda, but there's no way this game isn't going to be swamped with bugs and patches for months after release its just that kinda game.

Putting out a huge "last gen" game right before new consoles launch is just a dumb idea to begin with, so I never believed that date in the first place.

even if it doesn't run great they absolutely need those skus to exist and people will most likely buy it even if it runs at 25 FPS

This makes my choice to either wait a month or so to play this when i have a new computer built or just play it on my old machine a lot easier. Hopefully this is the last delay though.

I'm actually curious if this is an indirect reveal of one of the console launch dates. We know they're waiting as long a spossibke but also have to hit before Black Friday.

Sony has a rule that any game going gold after July needs to have a PS5 version or PS5 support so I wouldn't be surprised if the extra dev time is so they can throw something together.

I have a feeling this is going to be a PS4 game on PS5 though, not really expecting it to run like a PS5 game if that makes sense.

This is kind of concerning actually. Didn't they already downgrade the graphics and remove a third person mode from this to try and fix a lot of issues? I'm surprised they needed to delay it again.

Hasnt this always happened? GTAV came out two months before the PS4 and Xbox One, for instance. A large majority of people will not get these systems at launch so it makes sense.

They already confirmed that the PS5 and XSX versions were coming out in 2021.

half the sales for Witcher 3 were on PC. they'd probably be fine.

obv this way is preferable because more people can play it and CDPR make more money

Eh, the launch year sales were mostly on console. PC only caught up once the game was more heavily discounted there, and discounted sales aren't worth nearly as much as full price sales.

Sounds like buying a PC for this was a good decision, although with this I could have waited a year. <_<

Kinda, yeah? FF9 on PS1, GOW2 on PS2, TLOU/GTA5 on PS3/360.

With forward compatibility (and a broken economy + pandemic), it makes more sense now than ever to push cross-gen games as long as feasibly possible.

Absolutely, though FFIX and GoW2 were after launch so in that regard there is also Dark Souls II and South Park from this gen. You are correct, there is always a market for the old stuff for a good while. I suspect that will be even more true this time like you say!

I do wonder though, Sony seem to have gone in an opposite direction this time. They are really stressing the generational shift more than ever (possibly excluding the PS3), have minimised backwards compatibility as a selling point and may entirely avoid forwards compatibility. If they stick to that and this thing is expensive, that is a bad bet.

Isn't that the same as with the PS1 and PS3? What Sony games were released on those after the PS2 and PS4 came out?

PS3 had quite a few, Gran Turismo 6 as an exclusive, but also Resogun and LittleBigPlanet 3 were cross-gen. And baseball. You might look at that and say thats not much, but it was like half their first party output for that year. And effectively all the third party games of course.

Conversely it looks like they will fully drop the PS4 this year, going from their rhetoric.

GT6 releasing (only) on the PS3 is still baffling, arguably even more with so with hindsight over how Sony handled their car games this gen.

If this game is that nerfed on PS4, I might just wait until the PS5's first price cut to get it. Most of the recent PS4 games I've played (God of War, RE2/3) already pushed my console so hard that I was legit concerned it could start smoking.

I don't know what it is about God of War's map screen but it legit sounded like my PS4 was ready to join the space race every time I pulled it up. Hopefully PS5's design allows for better ventilation.

If baseball was crossgen last time I'd kinda expect it to be this time too. Though looking at the titles you mentioned, Resogun was a three-console release - came out on the Vita and PS3 on the same day a year after it came out on the PS4. That's a bit of a different category.

GT6 is a good example though yeah. And also a good example of why releasing exclusives on your last gen console is a bad idea (same with the last few 3DS exclusives - Bowser's Inside Story and Metroid Samus Returns suffered a lot).

It's sitting in my steam library already purchased so IDGAF when it comes out cause I already got it.

But yes, i will always be happy with a delay that leads to a well made product than one shipped that has issues that needs constant patching the first few weeks.
