My store's a mix. We have a lot of older who outright refuse to use self checkout under any circumstances for a variety of reasons going from "I don't want to put cashiers out of a job" to something about them not liking technology.
Why should I be expected to do the cashier's job, yet still pay the same prices for giving you less overhead?

Too much a stingy ass to do it myself without a discount, too honest to steal shit while I'm doing it. I dunno.

I'm a millennial and I hate self checkout.

When I shop, I shop for a month with a massive cart full of items. I'm not gonna stand there and do that much work, fuck that.

This. It's a huge hassle. I know how to efficiently and effectively use self-check... but god do I hate them. I bust my ass every day at work, last thing I want to do is scan and bag 100 items of groceries.

I mean, you're bagging them anyway and putting them up on the till, is a sliding motion to your left/right really THAT much more work?

One of you shops where an employee bags them for you.

The other doesn't.

Kind of underlines the dissonance between posters in threads like this :/

There's 3 grocery stores within walking distance of my place. Only one has employees doing this and it depends on availability.

You guys haven't even seen Walmart's final form.

There's a Walmart in NY that's run by AI and it can detect everything in the fucking store including people and weights and shit.
Yeah, it's in Long Island. It's not a Walmart. It's a Walmart Neighborhood Market.

I go there. Shit is creepy. The entire back is a huge open window data center with tons of servers and shit. Shit is constantly scanning the whole store.

Genuinely was not aware this was even a thing. Not sure I've ever seen it here in Britain, despite having gone to supermarkets all over the country.

It's entirely possible some countries don't even have it as a service.

Here in Quebec, I've seen it at only one chain where you may have an employee bag your groceries in recent years, it used to much more common.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. This shit happens to me all the time, sometimes more than once in a single checkout. And usually I have to wait several minutes for someone to come and help me.

If they take too long to come over I usually move over to another checkout. Blocked off 4 of them once to finally figure out not scanning the item was the way to go

Robots are the future everyone. We all will be replaced, cashiers, laborers, accountants, scientists, CEOs... even politicians.

Soon, we all will have no jobs, but that is when utopia will finally be achieved. It's why we need to make sure we get the proper things in place before the massive layoff, a UBI, plenty of housing, and plenty of avenues for people to do the creative things they want to do (robots can do these too, but for the sake of organic living beings, we will leave this to the organic humans).

I mean, Amazon Go already exists. It has no cashier and no self check-out, you just grab the items, walk out of the store and get charged automatically for whatever you walked out with. Everything should be like that.

Sounds like a personal problem.

Yeah I love the self checkout personally, mainly because Im way faster than 99% of the cashiers whose lines I end up in. I just want to get out of there as soon as possible.

Also every time an employee has had to come over to override something it was a mistake I made, not some issue with the process itself.

I can't see this being a success the way it's currently set up. What about customers who have their carts filled to the brim? Some of those shoppers are definitely not going to want to self-check out in that scenario. It would be very time consuming for many.

My walmart has two self check out linea that have the full coneyor belt like a regukar line. Honestly I can scan everything and bag it quicker than a cashier most of the time. Which to their defense they do it all day so fatigue affects their speed in sure

The Walmart by my house is so awful. They can take forever to help you override something. I prefer going to stores that have a mix of both, like superstore. Self-checkout for when I have two or three items. Cashier for more. Why the fuck should I bag my own groceries and scan them so Walmart can make even more profit. Fuck the Waltons.

Tbh Cashier is a very meaningless and unfulfilling job.

The more we phase it out the better for everyone's mental health; the jobs we have today is just completely meaningless and it offers no benefit to one's self and others.

We need jobs that actually have some meaningful impact in someone's life and others.

However

I don't believe Human Cashiers will disappear entirely; it will still be needed for small businesses and countries not as developed.

Anyone on CE knows I'm a big supporter of Robotics; we desperately need to reach the next advancement in society or you can forget about having any real space age, and that also means we need to respect each other as well because right now everyone is constantly screaming each other.

I worked at a Walmart for 3+ years and used self checkout exclusively everyday for any shit I needed. Ever since leaving we still use self checkout every time we shop no matter how big our cart is.

We have never had any issues whatsoever and get confused at the amount of people that can't figure out how to use it. Like older people I understand that, because they're just not good with technology usually. But anybody younger than like 40 that can't figure out self checkout is extremely befuddling to me.

My store doesn't even have the auto-sweeper. And given the way some of the teens act around here, that's probably a good thing. Inevitably it would get fucked with weekly. My preferred example is idiots throwing glass jars of pasta sauce into its path just to see if it will clean up pesto and glass.
