I'm sick of all the panic mongering. Are we just supposed to sacrifice our economy and huge parts of our civilization until there's a vaccine (which might take 5 years or may never come)?

How many of your family members are you willing to let die to keep the economy moving?

Yeah until we have a vaccine or treatment, we can't get cocky. My area in NY is doing fucking fantastic at the moment, but I'm not going to take it for granted, this virus can spread so fast that things can go backwards pretty quickly.

Personally, once autonomous vehicle technology is truly reliable I believe we should seriously consider outlawing manual driving. I also believe much more funding needs to go to US public transit, and part of that benefit is getting drivers of the roads for safety reasons.

On average 90 people a day die from car accidents. The US lost over 400 lives yesterday from Covid-19 and at it's peak lost around 2000 lives a day. If that many people died every day from car accidents in America, actions would be taken.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/06/09/coronavirus-whats-the-risk-for-george-floyd-protesters/
The Bedford analysis offers two different scenarios for crowd counts of 600,000 people, based on news sources and Wikipedia estimates of daily protests in more than 400 cities.

One estimate is low, assuming a fatality rate of 0.5% and a transmission rate of 0.9 one person with the disease infects, on average, 0.9 others. This scenario would lead to 1,500 new infections each day and 15,000 secondary infections among protestors friends and family, eventually causing 50 to 75 deaths. The higher estimate assumes a transmission rate of 0.95 and a fatality rate of 1%. This scenario would lead to 3,000 new infections a day and a total of 54,000 secondary infections, causing 500-540 deaths.

The problem is we need everyone to be doing this. As it is now there's probably less than 30% of people in America actively practicing any of these guidelines.

Hm. I can sense the false dichotomy here. Perhaps police brutality is viewed as a greater threat, and worth the risk, unlike haircuts or restaurants.

It's still dangerous, and I hope people protect themselves, but tear gas makes the situation even more dangerous.

I'm 100% in favor of the protests. I think my posting record on this board makes that fairly clear. The protests haven't caused any significant increase nor did I ever claim they did. There are in fact multiple articles posted here with research that prove that the protests haven't. My statement was directed at the poster who was like "hurr durr, we can't stay inside forever, gotta keep the economy moving"

Hopefully you're right, because the entire argument for keeping the lockdowns going indefinitely is premised on the hope that we'll get a vaccine soon. Otherwise, we're just killing the economy and delaying herd immunity, when the same number of people will die regardless.
