The media's narrative up until recently was that if you gathered in large crowds you were a bad person.

And yet now that thousands are out protesting shoulder to shoulder (whether or not you think the protests are noble is irrelevant) we don't hear a fucking word about that.

How stupid do they think we are?

I'm kind of worried about how many people might end up in the hospital when the month ends. Symptoms might not even show up until a couple of weeks.

Better question is how stupid are we? the vast majority of the country also instantly stopped giving a fuck about or talking much about Covid because the media did. A disgustingly large percentage of people get virtually every discussion point or opinion they have from media and media alone.

If the media went on a Covid reporting spree again tomorrow, thats all it would take to get millions suddenly hyperfocused on that again

Here is a thought as I have been thinking about this.

A bunch of states are already returning to normal and forcing people back to work, often with minimal PPE.

Why is it OK for capitalism to ask you to put yourself in danger, but it is "stupid" for people to put themselves in danger to protest?

Precisely. The populace must be smart enough to follow commands, but not smart enough to question them.

It's not just yourself you're putting at risk. That was the whole point.

It's less because they are outside and the virus mostly spreads indoors. But yes they are still at risk, and pretty much every day health officials warn "if you are going to protest wear masks and gloves if you can".

That's not what TC is saying. Up until the protests started, people were still panicking about covid because the media was still reporting deaths, hospitalizations, new cases, etc. Now the media has stopped reporting on covid almost entirely and everyone has seemingly forgotten about it.

I actually care more about covid now than before because we have more cases of it, and social distancing is much worse.

When we had 6 confirmed cases on my state, people were going hardcore. Disinfecting everything, masks, and shutdowns.

Now we have 50k cases meaning more people to spread it, but people don't give two shots anymore.

Everyone out there consciously decided theyd rather live with covid than racism.

The reason people dont talk about covid like that is because people decided to take that Educated risk and its not an easy choice so why judge people for it.

plus most the conservatives complaining about people not following social distancing dont care and are just trying to call out people by making going out for a hair cut and going out to protesta police state murdering Innocent civilians a even comparison

Risk of transmission outdoors is much lower, especially if you follow basic social distancing rules. A lot of protesters are wearing masks, for instance. It's not a perfect system, but this is more important. Why? Because black people keep getting murdered and treated like second class citizens. Covid hit their population way harder, for instance, and almost nobody gave a fuck.

I think there's also a lot of truth is what an above poster mentioned in that the modern American attention span is condensed to whatever is in front of their face. Covid is boring now. People are tired of sitting at home. Politicians all over delegitimized the crap out of the crisis and forced people back to work. A lot of people are more bored of sitting around now than they are scared of the virus. My girlfriend, for example, will wear a mask into the grocery store, but she's driving down today for a birthday gathering for a friend. Trying to get her to stay indoors and away from other people is like pulling teeth because she craves social interaction the way plants crave electrolytes.

The culture in this country means that trying to coordinate people to do anything is like herding cats. And as important as the protests are, I think there's quite a few participants that were simply looking for an excuse to rage with other people and not think about Covid anymore. I know a few participants whose political engagement prior to Floyd's murder started and ended with Burning Man.

Yeah, it's the weirdest thing ever. So many are being put at risk and it's gonna end up hurting the people who they're fighting for the worst.

A parade fucked shit up back in 1918 and these are like hundreds every day across the country.

On one hand you have people protesting because they want haircuts

On the other hand you have people protesting because the cops are incredibly biased towards them and can literally execute them in the streets and get a paid vacation as "punishment"

Tell me TC. How the fuck are these similar? If anything the government and police should take responsibility for all covid19 related deaths this causes since they are at fault for causing the protests to begin with

So if a person says to stay inside due to shelter in place and then says "Wait your house is on fire, you should go outside!" (because your house is on fire), it makes no sense?

You genuinely believe people can't change their opinions as circumstances change?

Look we know who it in most danger from dying to covid. If you're at risk from dying to covid(the elderly and the sick) maybe you should quarantine.

People need to quit fearmongering Covid, these protest are important to the country and if you want them to stop then let a universal change happen.
