"Bacon and Cheese Whataburger meal."

"Would you like those on buns or Texas toast?" the cashier asks.

"Oh," you say, a bit surprised. "Um... Buns is fine."

"For the Bacon and Cheese, would you like American, Swiss, Monterey Jack or Pepperjack?"

"Monterey Jack."

"Plain onions or grilled?"

"Wow, really?" you say. "Um, grilled then."

"Drinks?"

"Two Cokes," you say.

"Here or to go?"

"To go," you say.

"Alright," the cashier says, factoring that all in. "That'll be $15.87."

You hand over a $20 bill and get your change with the receipt. You and Raven wait on the side for your order.

"If we're getting lodging at the same time as dinner," Raven says. "Could I vote for a motel this time? I know they don't usually have the better reputation, but I feel like we can get in and out of there better."

"That's fine. We'll only be there over night anyway. We'll get up a bit earlier, say..."

"6 AM?"

"That early?" Raven asks.

"Well, I feel it's only going to get hotter as we ride into Arizona and Nevada," you say, "so we should try to get going while the sun is only coming up."

"I guess that makes sense. ... I feel like we're definitely going to need another pool date."

"Yes, definitely," you say, trying not to sound eager.

"I still feel that bit of joy, you know," Raven says as she smirks at you.

Your order finally comes in, you head out, but you also take it easy so you and Raven can eat.

"Maybe we should rent a car," Raven says while carefully unwrapping a straw. "This part would be a lot easier, at least."

"I suppose so," you say. "I know my family will rent something for when they fly out here. And I suppose we'll need something for when your mother joins us..."

"I'll make sure to rent a car before we arrive in Vegas," you say. "I'll look into things in whatever town we arrive in at dinner time."

"Okay," she says. "Here."

She hands you your large Coke.

"Thank you," you say as you carefully take it.

You sip while Raven carefully brings out a burger.

"I can smell the bacon and cheese on this one," she says. "It's yours."

You use magic to hold your drink safely in place and grab your burger. You have Shadowfax drive himself so that you can unwrap the burger, admire the way it all looks, then take a big bite. The bacon and lettuce are crisp, the Monterey cheese is creamy, the sauce is tangy and the meat is juicy. The grilled onions is a great touch, too.

Raven carefully unwraps her burger and takes a bite.

"Mmm," she says. "Not bad."

"Mhm," you nod while chewing.

You and Raven each sip your sodas, and use more magic to hold your fries in place as you eat them out of the little boxes.

"What car should we get?" she asks. "I'm not really a car expert, I just know the basics."

"Well, I'm not much better," you say. "The real concern is towing Shadowfax along. We'll need some kind of cart for that, and the vehicle we rent will need to be strong enough to do it."

"Ooo, so like an SUV or something?"

"Yes, that might be good," you say. "We'll have to wait and see what selection there is, but I'm hoping for a..."

"Challenger. I know it's not really an SUV, but it'd have the power for towing."

"You just want a cool muscle car," Raven says. "I may not know cars, but I know car guys like that one."

"Well, yes, I suppose that's true," you say.

You and Raven continue carefully eating as you ride down the road, and arrive at Fort Washita after a couple of hours. You and Raven stretch your legs and look around, but there isn't much to this historic and historically haunted site during the day time. Raven takes some pictures, especially of a slab commemorating the Chickasaw Trail of Tears.

After Fort Washita, you start on a long drive for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. You consider your options as you exit Oklahoma and enter Texas.

Also for what it's worth Challengers can comfortably hold up to 5 people and have really large trunks. Not SUV levels of course, but really good for a coupe.

"Let's stop a little early," you say. "Amarillo is a good sized town, and we won't come across one like it for quite a bit of time."

"That's fine," Raven says. "Do you want to eat first or find a place to stay first?"

"A place to stay first," you say. "We can rest for a moment, wash up a little."

"That does sound better," she says. "It's been so hot out."

You pull into the La Quinta Inn just off of Highway 287, and see both a Taco Bell and a Wendy's right next door. That will make for an easy dinner.

You grab your things out of the MagiPocket, then walk inside the inn and up to the front counter.

"Welcome to La Quinta by Wyndham," the concierge says. "One room for two or two rooms for one?"

"One room for two is fine," you say.

The concierge checks for openings.

"Alright, we have this one," he says. "Room 149, down that way."

"Thank you," you say as you take the room key.

You lead the way down the hall and find Room 149 at the back. You open the door and see just the one bed.

"Well," you say. "We'll figure out sides of the bed later. For now, how about I go fetch something for dinner?"

"I'll shower while you do," she says. "What were you thinking of getting?"

"Well we had burgers for lunch, so I'm thinking tacos."

"That's fine. I don't need anything special, just normal tacos."

"Alright, I can get one of those big boxes of a dozen so we have leftovers for the road tomorrow."

"Oh, yeah, that'll save a lot of time."

"Okay, I'll be right back," you say.

You exit the room, leave the inn and go right across the way to Taco Bell. You walk inside and there are no lines so you go right to the counter.

"Welcome to Taco Bell," the cashier asks. "What would you like?"

"I'll have one of your Taco Party packs," you say.

"Half soft, half crunchy. Oh and two large Cokes."

The cashier nods and calculates the cost.

"That'll be $14.75."

You give $15 and get a quarter back with the receipt. You wait on the side but they load the box pretty quickly so you don't have to wait very long. You take the box and the tray of drinks and head back to La Quinta and to your room.

"Raven~," you call through the door.

You wait but the door doesn't open.

"Um, Raven? Are you there?"

Going to Taco Bell didn't take a lot of time, but you didn't think you finished faster than a shower takes. The door does open and Raven is there, hair dripping wet and hand clutching a towel.

"Sorry," she says. "The cold water felt so good!"

"I don't blame you," you say. "Take one of these, please."

Raven carries the box of tacos for you and sets it on the bed.

"You go ahead and start eating, I need to dry off and dress," she says.

"Oh, that's a matter of opinion," you smirk as you look at her.

"Ha ha," she says with sarcasm.

She goes to the bathroom while you pull out one soft taco and one crunchy taco, and quite a few packets of sauce. You start with the soft taco, open it up and and squirt out two entire hot sauce packets into it. While you eat the taco, you use your phone to search car rental services in Amarillo. You go with Hertz, it's pretty high rated.

You look at the "fleet" of cars they offer, and are fortunate to find a Dodge Challenger R/T! 5.7 liter V8, 375 Horsepower, 25 miles per gallon and seats five with trunk space for three suitcases. Perfect for your needs!

You scroll down and find the reservation booking. Pick-up time will be 10 AM tomorrow morning so you have plenty of time to rest. The location for pick-up is Wolflin Avenue, but the location for drop-off will be in...

Waiting until California, you'll have the car long enough to relax as you spend time in Oregon with your family and Raven's mother. But now you have to calculate how many days that will take...

You're on your way to Four Corners and that'll take about 9 hours. The Grand Canyon would be another 8 hours after that, and then Las Vegas is maybe 3 hours for that. That's 20 hours of driving but who knows how long it'll be when factoring in taking time for food, for resting over night, and making sure Shadowfax and the towing cart are still alright. Your birthday isn't for another 10 days as it is, though your celebration can be earlier.

For the sake of the math, you take the daily rate of this Dodge Challenger and multiply by seven for a week. There's also an additional insurance fee for drivers under 25, which is definitely you. And you basically get $800, meaning longer pushes it to $1000. You suppose you can use your credit card and splurge for your birthday.

"What're you looking at?" Raven asks as she returns in little shorts and tank top.

"The price for our rental Challenger," you say.

"How much?" she says as she looks at your phone.

"We're looking at no less than $800," you say. "It'll probably be more like $1000 since we want to be able to take our time with things."

"Oof," Raven says.

"Yes, but I'll just use credit. And it can count as a birthday present to myself."

"Nice."

Raven sits on the bed and grabs herself some tacos while you lock in the information for the rental. You go with ten days to be safe, give your credit information for the big fees, and lock it in.

"We'll pick it up tomorrow at 10 AM," you say, "and return it to a Hertz location in... Ah, Redding, California. That's fairly early in Northern California so that'll be fine."

"What about the towing thing for Shadowfax?" she asks while grabbing hot sauce.

"Oh yes, can't forget that," you say.

"Okay," Raven says as she pours out sauce into the crunchy taco.

Raven takes a big bite, the shell crunches, and she lets out a muffled yelp as something goes down her shirt. She carefully holds her taco up as she moves a hand into her cleavage to bring out a piece of lettuce. Then she notices you watching and you look away.

"You can't fool an empath," she chuckles. "I can sense your intrigue and desire. Naughty boy."

You chuckle and look back and she's popped the lettuce in her mouth.

"Did you just have the lettuce from your chest?" you ask.

"What?" she says, mouth still full. "It's no different than if you had lettuce on your chest. Except, y'know, if you're a guy, boobs are special."

"First of all, they are," you say. "But you're also right, it isn't really that different."

"Thank you."

You two eat your tacos with the news on. The weather is sunny but hot as it has been, with maybe rain by the weekend. But you'll be leaving here so hopefully you leave the storm behind.

"So," Raven says as she starts on a soft taco. "What do you want to do tonight?"

You look at her as she scoots a little closer to you.
