House Democrats looking to deliver another round of $1,200 relief checks to Americans are encountering skepticism from an unexpected source fellow Democrats in the Senate. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, said he wants the next round of coronavirus relief to be more focused on the households that have been hardest hit by the economic downturn brought on by the pandemic. Id like to take a look at all that aid we provided and get good economic information on the value for that, from the point of view of our economy but more importantly on fairness to people who are really hurt, Cardin said when asked whether he would support another round of checks. Cardin said the direct payments made more sense in March when Congress wanted to get money out the door as quickly as possible. But now, as states are allowing businesses to reopen around the country, he says lawmakers should look at who will most need relief in the coming months. We wanted to get money out quickly. We used the refund checks to do that, we used the PPP program to do that, he said, referring to the Small Business Administrations popular Paycheck Protection Program.

RIP 2nd stimulus check. I knew it was doomed when states started reopening.

McConnell has already said they won't do further relief, so this is their last shot to avert disaster(or, at least, ameliorate it) before the election.

And it's basically the same talking point that Pelosi had for the first stimulus check: A litmus test so that only people making less than X should get a check.

I'm all for more help but ONLY to those who need it. Why does someone on disability/retirement pulling a few thousand a month need the help for? This is supposed to help those that lost their only income through no fault of their own.

Bullshit like this will cripple the already weak dollar. Help those that need help, and nothing more. Guy I know gets $1300 every month in disability. He didn't need the help but got it anyway...and he wasted it in 2 days like a kid in a candy store. Dumb.

Doesn't change that most people are viewed as subhuman by employers.

I just feel like if you tell someone that they are essential, then you should pay them like it.

I'm speaking of more than myself. I have a support network and don't personally see myself as shit. I actually love my co-workers. I know I am too good for my job. Me getting a better job isn't going to change the very fabric of society. It's just going to pay me more. Companies are still going to pay lip service about "now more than ever" and then underpay their "valuable" workers and look for every opportunity to fuck them over.

There are plenty of people who went from rags to riches so this isn't true. You may not make billions but you don't need to be a billionaire to be happy nor successful. The bar to have a comfortable living is pretty small.

This is nothing but a excuse you conjured to give up and never try. A 60-70k income job with decent health insurance is all most people need to live a comfortable life in most places of American.

This is not a insurmountable obstacle by any stretch. A married couple making 30k+ is there right off the bat, a single mother on benefits is there, and for single individuals its damn near one trade school away.

They wanted to get the money out quickly for round one. Now that the economy is more or less open, I should expect them to take their time and come out with a plan that's actually good.

The plan from the start should have been a check every 2 weeks for a few months.
