my lappy died on me :(

I'm pretty bad at searching for computers on my own, and having to do it on a phone is even worse. I could use some help

I don't have a definitive price range, but I'd like for it to be under $1000 if possible. I've got a 1 TB HDD and a 256 GB SSD already so we don't really need to worry about storage. I want 16 GBs of RAM and a decent CPU and GPU that can generally play games well; it doesn't need to be extraordinary.

Basically, I'm just looking for a solid computer.

I just bought myself one of those Walmart EVOO laptops, and honestly despite it being a no-name brand it's working flawlessly

This one is under $1k
https://www.walmart.com/ip/685182150

although the one I have is $200 more and has a mechanical keyboard + an RTX 2060

I've had it open. It's difficult to organize and compare laptops with only a phone and I can't easily look up how good the processors are either.

What did you think of the model you had before? The 16GB is a pretty big bottleneck for that price point, maybe a Ryzen CPU could also help achieve whatever you need the RAM for.

Here's a solid baseline comparison to start off with lots of reviews: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/6335912.p

If that much RAM is an issue, do most laptops have room to upgrade? I can probably salvage the RAM from my old laptop

Tiger Direct is looking pretty powerful right now..

Umm yes Google says most have two slots so you should be able to add another stick but idk how that works, it shouldn't be too hard to find 16GB for under 1000 though, it'll just be the thing you use to narrow down your options (which should be fine if it's important to you)

I have two 4GB sticks so that probably isn't helpful

Any gaming needs for the laptop or is it all done elsewhere

I'm looking at this right now as a start
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6782289&CatId=4935

I'd like to be able to use it for gaming but it doesn't need to be insane. Anything better than what I had before (Firepro W5170M) should be fine in terms of graphics. I can't find any real information on the graphics of this laptop

I've used these pages for graphics benchmarks:
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

First one has Vega 10 slightly above W5170M as an approximation only, while second has it significantly lower.

re: Upgrading RAM, if you get a model with an 8GB stick occupying one of two slots, you can still upgrade to 12GB using one of your old sticks provided they're DDR4 (or DDR3 if that's what the new laptop has).

apparently Vega is integrated

I'll see if I can find details on RAM configuration

Thanks for the help guys. The ROG was looking really good, but I think I managed to find something a little more well-rounded

https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/dell-g5-15-5590-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5590-laptop/cag155w10p1c1000
https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/new-vostro-15-7590-laptop/spd/vostro-15-7590-laptop/cav157w10pc1004

These have the same CPU (much better than ROG's), the same GPU (a little worse but it's still solid) and the same monitor size. The main difference between the two is that the Vostro is lighter, a little more expensive, and has 1 16GB stick instead of 2 8GB sticks, and doesn't come with an HDD. One on hand, I already have an external hard drive and a sheath, and a 4GB stick of RAM I could probably stick in there. On the other, another TB of storage would probably be pretty cool and the G5 is $150 cheaper

i get a 30% discount from buying from Dell's site btw

edit: apparently the 1650 gpu is bad and I should go for this instead?

That Dell discount should get you a pretty good deal! Vostro doesn't have an ethernet port if you care about that, also what's wrong with the 1650, if you got by on a W5170M before it should do you fine

I ended up getting this and a 16 GB stick
https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-laptops/dell-g5-15-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-15-5590-laptop/gn5590dmqus

turns out it was a discount up to 30% and the savings on this product were... 2%

Thanks for all of the help people

Don't mean to hijack this topic, but can I also get help finding a good laptop?

It's for a gift, she will mostly be using it to roam the internet and the occasional series/movies stream.

Looking for no more than $400.

If it's just for casual use and she doesn't need to install desktop programs, consider a lower-end Android tablet/iPad/Amazon Fire? Otherwise you're mostly looking at Chromebooks or used laptops with that price.

I would probably also use it for work, meaning use of Microsoft Office.

You can still get that on an Android tablet or iPad! I guess you'd probably need to buy a keyboard attachment too...if a tablet sounds like too much work, it'd probably have to be a Chromebook laptop. Asus, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, etc. all have their own models. Or just go used.

She specifically wants a laptop. And I thought Chromebooks don't have Microsoft Office programs. Am I wrong?
