Yeah I'm talking about the initial shock. I have friends in retail who were yelled at a lot the last time plastic bag prices went up. Uninformed consumers think it's a greedy move by stores rather than a tax, or they just vent at the clerks

Its got nothing to do with cutting down bag use. It is simply just to get more money out of the customer. Nothing more. And people ate that shit up

If it reduces bag sales by 90% (like intended)...
How are they getting more money out of the customer? In the case of Sweden, let's pretend we get similar numbers. This is effectively a 100% increase, for simplicity. if we see a 90% reduction in bag sales, then the actual money in will be ~20% of what it was pre tax hike.

Well for starters. Plastic bags used to be given out for free! So any money made since charging is profit. Any increase, even more so. People would still be buying them, So 1 person buying a bag is the equivalent of nearly 3 people buying it

Plus on top of that. People need to line their garbage bins at home with something so it increases the sales of those garbage bin bags where people used to just reuse shopping bags for their bins.

Not sure if you're serious. It doesn't really matter if plastic bags used to be given out for free way back when, what we're talking about here is a tax increase for the manufacturer that effectively doubles the price for the consumer. That means it will have an effect on the current income stream, and that effect is likely negative.

On top of that, garbage bin bags in bulk are not covered by this tax, so the govt won't be seeing a larger income there to compensate.

Sometimes a negative is necessary in one area for a greater good in another. As long as people recycle their bags then any cost increase is minimal and in my opinion worth making.

Ah ok yeah I see that now cheers for clarifying. Do we have any current figures for how much tax is generated from bad tax? Also taxes can be used to alter behaviour as much as they can for making money.

I go to dollar tree and get the 8 pack of white kitchen trash bags. That's like 13 cents a bag.

I just reuse them for trashbags. Its not a massive difference.

in achorage they banned plastic bags back in like october or november. and made you pay 10 cents for paper bags or you can use your own bag. then covid happened and they started letting you have the paper bags for free and banning your own bags. and then they ran out of paper bags and are back to free plastic bags despite the previous law.

Thats the price to pay for safety
