During Thursday's White House coronavirus task force briefing, an official presented the results of US government research that indicated coronavirus appeared to weaken faster when exposed to sunlight and heat.

The study also showed bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minutes, and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

Mr Trump then hypothesised about the possibility of using a "tremendous ultraviolet" or "just very powerful light" on or even inside the body as a potential treatment.

"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute," he said. "And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?

"Because you see it gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number on them, so it'd be interesting to check that," he said.

So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light and I think you said that hasn't been checked but you're going to test it. And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said youre going to test that too. Sounds interesting. And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?

brainstorming at a press briefing is not interpreted as brainstorming by the general public, it is interpreted as endorsements

the purpose of press briefings is sharing information with the general public. statements made by the president are planned in advance. the staffer was not briefing him for the first time on their results.

if we are continuing with this highly generous interpretation of trump's behavior, he either ignored or forgot the prior briefing from that same staffer that went before him before it went before a hundred million american viewers

which means he either doesn't care whether people die of cornoavirus, or he's going senile and can't remember what happened yesterday

that's more generous than "he refuses to be briefed on the science his administration is conducting and just lets them announce it in front of him live, and is nothing but a figurehead"

This is just an excuse to flat out lie about what's being said. There is a significant difference between openly saying "we should look into this" and actively telling people that it is an effective cure. It's still a stupid thing to say, but they are in no way the same sentiment and you can't just pretend they are.

It's possible to criticize Trump for saying something stupid, and also criticize people actively lying about what he said. If the concern is really that people will try injecting themselves with Lysol, then telling everyone that Trump said that injecting Lysol cures the coronavirus is a great way to make that happen.
