I don't mean the piddly warp points they put in, I mean when you hit endgame you should be able to warp to literally any square in the map you've been to before. Almost every Metroidvania I play has me following the same pattern:

Beginning: Exploration! New stuff! This is fun!
Midgame: More exploration, some moderate backtracking. Still fun.
Last 40% of the game: Boy do I love traveling through the same room for the 7th time to try and find the stuff I missed.

Thanks for listening to my Ted talk titled "Why I like Hollow Knight way less than I want to".

Going back through once you have all the powers and finding all the stuff you missed is a huge part of the fun of Metroidvanias though

100% agreed on this

having more warps doesn't prevent you from running around if you want to; it just prevents potentially tedious backtracking

i dont know about other games but for the later castlevania games themselves like the DS ones, as well as bloodstained, there are abilities you can get towards endgame that basically allow you to zoom past the screens at lightning speed while ignoring everything.

combined with the generous warp points around the map there really isnt too much difference from just being allowed to directly warp to every room

Nah. Its fine. Only game its an issue is Metroid Samus returns. That game was horrible with its warp points.

the tedious backtracking is the worst part of Metroidvanias after the aimless wandering when I can't figure out what I'm supposed to use my new power on in order to get somewhere I couldn't get before

I wouldn't go that far but they should have lots of warp points and an item or power-up that lets you warp from anywhere to a hub/warp point.

also: how take

HOW TAKE

Hollow Knight has warp points but not anywhere near enough, and traveling from room to room never speeds up that much.

Hollow Knight really should have let you warp to any bench you found.

As long as there's general area ones every so often, I don't mind having to travel a bit. I just see it as part of the journey personally

I prefer a strategically built map where your upgrades make traversing the map significantly faster as you go along, thus negating the need for fast travel except for maybe a few extremes on the map.

I honestly could not disagree more.

Forcing you to go back through areas is how you find rare drops.

Fast travel would ruin the metroidvania genre for me completely. The slow burn exploring is why I'm here, retreading old ground to find new things is why I'm here

I've been playing Metroid Prime which has none, so I liked the title. But everywhere seems too much. I think it would make the world seem a bit artificial.
