Outside of performance issues I think this game is fantastic. I love how risk vs reward everything is. Everything just seems well thought out. Like...
Choosing between disarming traps for parts or lure enemies into them....
Using a match to kill an enemy on the ground or waiting until enemies get closer for a multi kill
Use freeze bolts to freeze bombs and disarm them without risk
The bosses like the Keeper are fantastic. I liked the Sentinel fight (the dog) and Laura is as nervewracking as it gets. The last boss is pretty shitty though. Wasn't a fan of that.
I love how every chapter feels fresh and unique. Every chapter offers something new and changes up the formula slightly so it feels well paced and exciting. So much tension around every corner. Chapter 10 is absolutely insane.

Unfortunately TEW2 was bad.

The second one was better than the first one. Not by much. They're both eh and forgettable.

Which is a shame because I really wanted to like it.

Nah, EW1 is trashfire. 2 is better in every single way.

I really don't know how people can say the 2nd game is better.

They streamlined it, simplified it, bloated with filler, the open world sections are boring, the linear and stealth sections aren't well designed. There's no tension like the first game. In the TEW2 enemies stop chasing you after about 4 seconds. They'll see you, chase you and then give up even if you haven't broken line of sight. It's really bad.
There's no risk vs reward element, it's just kind of generic and bland and far too easy.
The story is horrible as well. Cliche and cheesy in a bad way. Not that TEW1 had a genius plot but it respected your intelligence enough to let you piece of evidence together to come up to the conclusion of what's going on.

I think the only thing I prefer in Evil Within 2 is the ability to shoot while crouched and capacity upgrades aren't tied to green gel. And setting trap wires is pretty cool.
Enemy design is decent but not as good as say the Keeper or Laura. Regular enemies look uninspired but Obscura (camera thing) was pretty good.

Lol'd at the first game having a genius plot. It's very clear the story and set pieces were written by multiple people that didn't communicate with each other and then taped everything together.

I thought the second games plot was much better. The first game was awesome until the second half where it turned into a worse version of Resident Evil 4.

I like both games overall but yeah both have their issues.

Evil Within 1 has both better sections and significantly worse ones than TEW2. Some of those levels are a slog and cheap as hell (lets spawn this insta-kill boss right near you for the lols). It is overall a more tense and rewarding experience. The story is an incoherent mess outside of the Kidman DLC.

Evil Within 2 is more consistently good. But it's also rather easy and you're overpowered in comparison. I think the story was better overall and the visuals of the first third are great. I found exploring Union Square really fun.

I recently played Evil Within 1 and absolutely hated it.

They give you miniscule amounts of ammo like The Last of Us but throw a million enemies towards you like Resident Evil 4 and the result is the worst parts of both

Because it's Survival Horror. It's about picking your battles, conserving supplies, knowing how to take out multiple enemies with limited resources, utilizing stealth and sometimes just avoiding enemies completely.

I also never had an issue with insta kill enemies. Laura telegraphs her attack with a wind up animation, Ruvik in chapter 9 is easily avoidable. If you try sprinting from him you'll lose him and he'll likely reappear in front of you. You have to take it slow and react accordingly. Or use one of the hiding spots. That's why there's a shitload of hiding spots in chapter 9. If you're quick and quiet enough you can hide under a bed or in the closet.

Love how psychological its story was.

I always read that 2 was better than 1 but I think its the opposite.

See you say that, but the game throws so many upgrades and weapons your way that it's almost as if the game expects you to shoot your way out of most situations they introduce to you

Doesn't help that enemies pursue you and it's hard to progress unless everything in front of you is defeated

I much prefer the first one, but they're very different games. The first sits firmly within the survival horror genre; it's got plenty of flaws, especially towards the end of the game, but the second one goes way too far with trying to "fix" things, ditching a lot of the atmosphere in favor of a safer, more streamlined, and derivative experience. Its flaws are much less glaring, but it's largely a forgettable affair.

You have to get into the right rhythm. A few encounters seem impossible at first but it's doable. You've really got to be resourceful and play it smart.

Or you can just upgrade your match capacity, shoot some legs and set them on fire. That makes things a lot easier.

Both games are really good. I've been calling it Resident Evil Within coz EW1 is obviously the dev's attempt to tell Capcom that RE6 was a fucking mistake and that EW1 is what it should have been.

Then EW2 became completely a game of its own, which was a bit disappointing, but still very fun.

Loved 1. Never got around to playing The Keeper DLC, but I finished the first two DLCs.

I have 2 but haven't played it. I'll get around to it eventually.
