Id ~ Purpose
Scars of FAUNA
Memories of You

Fax Factory has some cool sounds and also some not cool sounds. I can appreciate this song a lot on a creative level but unfortunately that doesn't directly translate into a song I actually like. There's a decent number of things I'd vote this over but Id ~ Purpose is at least pretty solidly into "good" territory.

Scars of FAUNA is quite good. Lots of neat instruments and also that recorder(?) part is really great. Also does a good job of building energy over the course of the song in contrast to many similar songs that just try and overwhelm you by turning things up to 11 from the start and then just keeping it there. Imbrium also has that really cool Neotokyo ambiance going on but I don't think it's enough here. I really wish I knew how Ed Harrison manages to make tied whole notes sound so compelling though.

TOC is two top tier songs and it makes me sad that I have to vote against one of them.

Not going to rank these but this is the best day yet by a longshot. Even the worst song today is probably better than 3 or so songs from every other day so far.

Fax Factory
Scars of FAUNA

Fax Factory is a fun weird song ! My kind of thing. ID is not really my kind of thing so this is an easy match for me. Though Faxtory it's the kind of weird that I can imagine is not very popular so I'm expecting the loss here oh no but a prepared oh no

2nd match is quite a bit harder. Imbrium is also a weird song and I like weird! But it is not quite my kind of weird as much as the Fax but there's still plenty of variety and interest to enjoy here, with the little hotel ring for service bells on either side, the grinding bursts of bass, the drums that are more active than the slow, dark, thoughtful feel of the other sounds may agree with. But, BUT, the girls. the vocals, they are an ever present sound that I don't care for, a main spotlight that disagrees with me! In comparison, Scars of FAUNA is all around solid, above average. But I kind of feel like there's little about it I can really "point out" as to why I enjoy, other than simply being an actively neat song. (Well that undescribable sample that goes on right from the start and more is cool. good I'm talking about the percussive lens sound (like I said it's indescribable)) uuuuuuuhhh what I'm saying is I guess I kind of prefer Scars of Fauna but it feels more of a SAFE song where as Imbrium is more DARING and INTERESTING it makes me want to vote for it in one way, but the GIRLS bring it down for me too much and Faunascars stands tall enough on it's own to Overcome

dont feel like dealing with those toc's today

Now that I've decided to not change my votes, my rankings for today are now

New-to-me songs:
Imbrium >= FAUNA >>> Fax Factory

Familiar song rankings:
Black Song > Id ~ Purpose >>> Memories of You

I have a tough time comparing new discoveries to ones that I've known for a long time, so I had to make two sets of rankings. >_>

I need to do this earlier if I want to have enough time to do proper write ups lol.
One time I'll say is that those drums in Imbrium are fucking crazy and Memories of You is as good as usual.

Id ~ Purpose
Imbrium
The Black Song (International Version)

-I've probably talked about id purpose enough times over the years-- I like it, it's good; the only thing I'll point out is that there's a little flourish midway through probably my favourite section of the track-- 1:10-- that I particularly enjoyed today, like it was the bloom of a little musical spring flower
-fax factory makes its intentions pretty clear within the first fifteen seconds of the track; mentally it expresses itself like a musical equivalent of a warioware game-- a passing array of phases of strangeness, each with something to distinguish it, but within a tightly-bound structure-- in this case its fairly strictly-defined meter, which I guess is sort of an expression of the 'factory' nature of the track. it's fun but it strikes me as more of a passing fancy-- it says 'I am strange' and I want it to express more than that

-very nekomata, like sipping from a juice box labelled 'NAOYUKI SATO corp'; quick trills and flourishes with flowery piano and flute/pipe synth and world-music accompaniment on thumping kick drum. I have to admire Master's consistency in creating fun compositions with this template
-oh hey both of these tracks are in the same key!!
-Some of the tracks on the Neotokyo soundtrack that strike me, and that I find memorable, express a very clear single idea to me-- they shout it out, almost, like an imperative. For Impetus it's 'chase'; for Footprint, it's 'investigate'. Imbrium says 'invent/create'. It's hard for me to describe why, but there's a pensiveness to it that brings to mind the methodical and deliberate nature that such an act can take on. I think this is best expressed in 1:52 (maybe my favourite part of the track)-- long hours in the study, examining, tinkering, thinking. In between, the the bell noises and somber strings-- and through it all, the voices that bounce back and forth. Suddenly it all lines up (3:11)-- that perfect storm, when everything clicks together and the strings swell. (There's a tiny moment of piano at 3:44 whose effect I really love during this segment.) Imbrium means rain or storm in Latin-- but it's the genitive plural form, so it might be more accurate to say it means 'of storms', and I think that's a great illustration of both the track and of the act of creation itself. This is my favourite track on one of my favourite video game soundtracks, and I think, more than anything, this is why it is.

-whoops didn't leave enough time for talking about the third match. uh, pretty close! both evoke (and both a certain sadness), but differently-- one describes tragedy, the other a wistfulness. Black clouds on the horizon or summer days past. they hold my attention in different ways, and I could be convinced either way depending on my mood.
