- Each set of matches lasts 24 hours, even if the new one isnt up by then.

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Id ~ Purpose
jubeat saucer fulfill - Scars of FAUNA
Drakengard 3 - Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

Match 1: Id ~ Purpose is tried and true. Fax Factory is going for uhh something, but I'm not sure entirely what.

Match 2: Scars of FAUNA FAKE LastPandemic, actually it's pretty cool too. Neotokyo music I've warmed up to a little bit, still not feeling Imbrium.

ToC: Black Song is all tragic with its sad piano, Memories of You still sounds like Top 40 Pop.

No hard choices today.

Id (Purpose) (48th) vs Fax Factory (172nd)
Scars of FAUNA (24th) vs Imbrium (119th)
Kuroiuta (International Versions) [47th] vs Kimi no Kioku [31st]

ID PURPOSE BACK AGAIN AAAAAAAAAAAAA it's time to put down your swords chrom and lucina..... but uhhhh not right now i guess cause i feel very strongly about this particular match lol. Not that Fax Factory is by any means bad despite being 20th from the bottom in the contest for me (spoiler alert i only dislike the dead last song this year lmao) Id Purpose still just hits a lot of good notes for me, and I always have to give it credit for being one of the only cool and unique usages of the FE main theme in... well, the whole series. Fax Factory is something I really should like because I LOOOOOVE "video game sound effects baked into song" but I don't find any of the particular sounds used in this appealing so its just kinda noise that is vaguely interesting as I'm listening and then immediately forgettable. I can appreciate it for its value and its place among the rest of the bracket, but I can't vote for it here.

Nekomata Master is my dad he tucks me in at night and tells me stories like [bagpipe sounds over drum n bass] and it makes me happy :))) Honestly even though this is far from my favorite Nekomata, this is probably... the best at actually being a "Nekomata track", like it has literally everything that he does best in this neat little package and its so cool. And I'm actually voting for it this year instead of forgetting and letting its opponent win by one vote!!! (sorry for the flash frost, scars...) Imbrium is a damn cool song, I really like the offkilter bah bah bah and ringers just surprising you out of nowhere over top of this somewhat regular drumbeat. It's got a lot of groove and playfulness to it for being somewhat lowkey and somber at its core. Honestly, would definitely not mind if this match ended up being very close despite my rather strong feelings on it!

Kuroiuta is pretty cool but it takes literally 2 minutes and 36 seconds to illicite any sort of reaction from me besides "okay i am waiting for this melody to be used for something cool" and then finally when it comes in at 3:39 i realize how much i actually like it but the slog up until then isn't usually worth it for me!! and then it ends with a minute of piano outro thats kinda mweeeh so like half of the song in the end is really worth it. Meanwhile Kimi no Kioku starts up a banger and never lets up UNTIL MY LIFE IS EXHAUSTED so yeah pretty easy choice for me here too

Id ~ Purpose
Scars of FAUNA
Memories of You

Id's as pretty good as ever. One of the better FEs, for as much as that's worth. Fax Factory I like the voices (are those voices?). I feel like it's not as bad as the first time I listened to it. It doesn't have any outright bad parts at least? Not much for good parts though.

Fauna's as great as ever. High tier Nekomata Master~. Imbrium not high tier Neotokyo tho.

Memories of You a top Persona song. Definitely the best credits song. Really nice happy/sad feel to it. I dunno what it is about Black Song, there's just something annoying about it.

Id ~ Purpose
Scars of FAUNA
Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

I've never really considered myself an Id Purpose fan, though I don't mind it nowadays. That said its opponent is far too sporadic for me - reminds me of psychedelic/dark psytrance music and that is very frequently a *huge* miss.

Similarly I've never considered myself a Neotokyo fan, but Imbrium was a very pleasant surprise! Like the drum and bass feel and the 3-over-4 polyrhythm stuff. Not good enough to topple Scars but if it wins I won't be too mad.

you know I came in near the end of VGMC9 and was perfectly fine with Memories of You retiring but DAMN that is a rough draw

Fax Factory
Scars of FAUNA
Memories of You

Id ~ Purpose

Id ~ Purpose is... ok. It's a track that gets voted in every year and every year, generally there's tracks I like much more than it I want to see do better. I've explained my thoughts on the Fire Emblem series back with End of All (Land)... the Awakening ost feels too dramatic EPIC ORCHESTRA background music to a british medieval drama for me to really get into. Something I always notice with these OSTs is they try to sound like 'highlands/mountains' it's hard for me to match instruments to names but it's a sound design thing.

Fax Factory

My favorite part of this song is when the 'main motif' drops at 0:22. It feels like a cube's suddenly dropped and a camera's zooming around and inspecting it from all angles - stopping occasionally to take snapshots. I also love the 'satellite noises' at 1:37 I tend to love outer space sounds of any kind. In general, yep; this is Osamu Sato. Slowly realizing that I like this a lot more if I just view this as Crash Twinsanity but with all the vocals replaced with random sound effects. Lots of cool repeating of motifs, it feels like I'm inside a television the album art looks like it's inside a television.

Scars of FAUNA

Music for monkys [no e] that like swinging through trees and being free in the jungle and dancing [music video for adventure for a lifetime by coldplay] WOAH COOL BAGPIPES i like bagpipes thank you. I really like the rhythmic synths at the beginning and end of the song [and scattered midway through]. Really groovy I like it's glitchy bitcrushed. big 'nature' vibes that's why it's called 'Scars of FAUNA' i guess???

Imbrium

Music for running around underground afraid of monsters chasing you oh no i really don't like this. It feels like any second your vision is about to distort you'll lose all memory of what you are and fall apart... then suddenly wake up in a completely different area : ]]]] EVERYTHING is FINE hahaha. RUNNING DRUMS uncomfortable strings these voxes sound like what i would imagine a mouse to sound like GLASS BELLS LARGE ROOM that's good. i don't like uncomfortable atmospheres i like to feel happy i like music about friendship and being excited this is an 'uncomfortable atmosphere' song

Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

Rhythmic tribal music... slow... i'm not looking at the translation that spoils the song. there's not much i can think of, nor want to say about this song. there's a lot of percussion build up and then suddenly it stops!!!! and then apart from that there's ORCHESTRA slow strings and piano and emi evans singing so i guess it's looking as the whole world gets destroyed or something???? it feels threatening in a really calm way

Memories of You

The remix from the intro to P3FES is better imo but that's because it has more COOL SYNCOPATION [it's swing syncopation not straight forward syncopation although i want a persona ska soundtrack] this has a big early mid 2000s anime op/ed flavor to it the main artist i'm thinking of for whatever reason is FLOW, there's probably others but i'm just thinking of Shounen Heart and Fly Away both from Eureka Seven.. . if this is what nostalgia sounds like, i love it. vivid mental image of seagulls flying over a completely blue sky with no clouds.

Id ~ Purpose
Imbrium
The Black Song

why is there no song called Ego ~ Porpoise this feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Fax Factory is a mysterious song. Are we mass-producing faxes? Or fax machines? Perhaps we in fact faxed an entire factory to some distant island off the coast of Denmark. The world demands answers!

Scars of Fauna sounds so deliciously Gusty before it becomes so deliciously Nekomata and then it becomes both at once and it is SCRUMPTIOUS. Gets a little too rhythm-gamey for my tastes at times, but still a good jam.

Imbrium is super cool. I feel like I'm exploring a haunted industrial park filled with boo-bops. Which is, of course, the best kind of industrial park. That violin at the very end is literally perfect I cannot describe why but!!! This match is too close.

THE BLACK SONG is so good! It's kind of hard to express just why it's so good though, but -- bear with me, people who've heard me gush about this before -- it's not in Japanese. It's in faux Japanese with random linguistic drift, as if this song were transplanted back from a thousand years in the future or whatever and then we're left to decipher it like LINGUIST DETECTIVES it's so much fun someday I'm going to figure out a proper way to express the lyrics in future-English and release a lyric video with those lyrics for this and Final Song and nobody will see it because youtube will preference the videos with two million views and also I have no video editing skills but I will know it's there.

memories of you makes me cry every time. It's genuinely surprising to me that it retired, since the lyrics and context are a pretty big part of why I like it -- like quick aside here's the chorus: "We were together for a single, brilliant, shining moment, and I never knew how much it meant until it was too late. Now, all I can do is strive to keep it close to my heart; I will embrace the feeling. So, you know? I remember you, by my side then, always, always, always smiling, and though I've lost you, I'll bring you back; I will never leave you" -- though the piano over the guitar post-chorus is super moving too. This match is too close too.

I give this day a Harry-Dresdon / Dirk-Gently.

Fax Factory
Imbrium
Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Id ~ Purpose go away

LSD Dream Emulator - Fax Factory at 8.6 is my 2nd favorite lajsdfkas/J4??hseg song in the contest! I don't like it as much as the main themes of Tong-nou or Chu-Teng and perhaps some other LSD songs, but it has properties of them that I still like a lot. It's mad yet coherent, not just some nonsense somebody banged out with too much drugs and easy access to a DAW and random sample packs. Very weird. Weird is good. I hate my writeups.
Sato be like

jubeat saucer fulfill - Scars of FAUNA at 8.9 is my ???th favorite rhythm song in the contest! Nekomata Master good. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Neotokyo - Imbrium at 9.2 is my ???th favorite song in the contest! Not the Neotokyo song I wanted in... my top preferences are ineligible anyway so this'll do. Whenever I hear this song without seeing what it is I get confused and think it's some classical piece that ended up on my phone somehow. And then the bahs start. Neotokyo good. I don't want to have to choose between this and FAUNA r1...

Drakengard 3 - Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version) at 8.5 is my ???th favorite weebshit retiree in the contest! AT first I was thinking it was gonna be the Final Song except strictly worse... and then it did something different! This is a lot more conventional, I guess, then the Final Song. That's not always a bad thing. I judge them UNCOMPARABLE and give this version a lower version than I would the other.

Persona 3 - Memories of You at 8.3 is my 1st favorite spoiler retiree in the contest! Hey this is the OP except ED-ified. I expect a significant fraction of people to give this a 10/10 because that just seems to be how P3 fans do. It's pretty good, I guess yeah, the best parts of P3 music together in one nice package. NOT GOOD ENOUGH sorry

Id ~ Purpose
Scars of FAUNA
Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

I love Id ~ Purpose, though as someone with ADHD, I wish it weren't so dang long. The final level of Awakening isn't that hard; you don't need an 8-minute song! But of course, I still listened to it in its entirety, whereas I wasn't even able to withstand a minute of listening to Fax Factory. Then there's Imbrium, which I also listened to in its entirety even though my mind was made up well before it ended. Scars of FAUNA was so short! I wanted more! Well, okay, not quite its entirety, but close enough. After 4 minutes I was like "okay, I still need to listen to the two songs for the ToC". And it's a good thing it was the ToC, because I remembered liking the Black Song in the past, but it got off to such a sleepy start that I normally would've dismissed it in under a minute! Though as it continued to stay sleepy, I started to wonder if I wasn't thinking of something else from the same game. The Final Song! That's what I was probably thinking of. The Final Song was good. The Black Song, eh, it's okay. Somewhere around 2:22, though, I realized that for once, I wasn't exaggerating with my go-to adjective of "sleepy"; I very nearly caught a yawn from the vocals. Even the singer can barely stay awake! Yeah, thanks, bye. Memories of You starts off a little slow, too, but it only takes 19 seconds to pick up the pace. Except maybe that's not a good thing! I start writing these as I'm listening to them and it's obvious that after listening to The Black Song, I figured that I was almost certainly voting for Memories of You. Then I listened to Memories of You. That didn't even last two minutes, at which point I went back to The Black Song. And I'm glad I did! It turns up I gave up on it no more than five seconds before it got good! And hey, nothing wrong with big vocals in lullabies; when I was little, instead of the usual fare, my lullabies were showtunes and Whitney Houston songs.

Id ~ Purpose > Scars of FAUNA > The Black Song > Imbrium >> Memories of You >>>>> Fax Factory

Fax Factory more like Fax Fuckery.

Fax Factory
Imbrium
Memories of You

Id ~ Purpose vs Fax Factory: Well what is there to say about this match? Id ~ Purpose is the perfect example of the type of fire emblem music i dont like, so Fax Factory winning isnt a surprise. I do like a lot of tracks on the LSD ost though, but Fax Factory is the weakest for me on the ost.

Scars of FAUNA vs Imbrium: Now this was a bit of a tough choice. Both of these tracks are sitting about a solid 7/10 for me, but the vibe on Imbrium won me over in the end. I just like how chill it is and the drums going on through the entire track aren't bad either

Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version) vs Memories of You: Another pretty easy match up for me. Black Song has a very weak first half but a pretty good second half. I like the singer as well. On the other hand Memories of You has this infectious energy to it that always gets me nodding my head to the beat a bit every time i hear it.

Anyway, time for me to get back to relistening to the NMH2 ost

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Id ~ Purpose
jubeat saucer fulfill - Scars of FAUNA
Persona 3 - Memories of You

Regarding the poll options, I voted "questions about the contest itself" but I'm fine with any of those options (though I'm not particularly invested in GotD and Crazy Bus is most certainly not good).

MATCH 1

Hello again, Id ~ Purpose! Will this year be the year you finally retire? I vote no. Plus I have it losing to Scars of FAUNA round 2 in my favorites bracket, so that would interrupt my desired outcomes. I do have it as my wildcard of choice, but that could very easily change depending on which matches go my way. Anyway, I do like this song a lot, but I feel like it's a song that would never end up as a retiree in my favorites bracket because it wouldn't be strong enough to beat every song in its division. I love the melody at the very start of this song. It feels like you're returning home from battle and receiving a warm welcome. The rest of the song is pretty much just as great. It's really easy for me to listen to the full 8 minutes of this song without ever getting bored of the song (in fact I just did this now!).

I feel like I can occasionally get behind weird, sample-based songs, but Osamu Sato's work has almost never been among those songs. Fax Factory is no exception here. It's hard to explain why, I just think it appeals to certain tastes that I just don't happen to have. Stuff like this, I think, is very hit or miss for me. Maybe more often on the miss side than not. I feel like there's some indescribable thing that can make a weird song like this tick the right boxes. Take, for instance, Bomber Girl from last year. Something about it made the song very enjoyable for me, and I think, to a certain degree, it also appealed to people like Collen who really enjoy songs like Fax Factory. For whatever reason, though, that just doesn't hold true here.

MATCH 2

I really like this style of Nekomata Master music! It's not the best example of it, compared to something like Despair of ELFERIA, but Scars of FAUNA still a very nice song. World music like this is just very appealing to me in general. I think this tends to be the case for songs like this overall for me, but for this song, it has a great melody with really cool instrumentation in the bagpipes and flutes. I think the intro is a pretty cool, mysterious sounding one too. It reminds me of LastPandemic's intro, which I have similar feelings about.

Imbrium's an interesting song, but something about it makes it less appealing than other songs I've heard from Neotokyo. Since the two songs from this game that I know I really enjoy are Scrap I/O and Tin Soldiers, maybe it's just that Imbrium lacks some of the energy that those two songs have. I guess maybe the melody isn't quite as good as in those two songs, but that might also have something to do with what I just mentioned about the song's melody. It's definitely a good song! It's just that Scars of FAUNA is the clear pick here for me.

MATCH 3

Aaaahhh very painful match! I don't want to vote against either of these songs because they're both so good :(

In a sense, The Black Song honestly feels more final than The Final Song. It just feels very wistful at times, like everything's over and there's nothing left that can be done. But it's also very triumphant when the percussion picks up, as if Zero's still picking herself up to fight even though everything seems hopeless (note: I don't know anything about where this plays in context). I like The Black Song probably just as much as The Final Song, but yeah, The Black Song's a very good and pretty song!

Speaking of wistfulness, I think Memories of You brings that feeling as well! But I think it does that better than The Black Song does. I definitely enjoy that upbeat triumphant style of music when it hits all the right notes, just as The Black Song does, but the emotional style of Memories of You, I'd say, is a style I prefer over that triumphant style. I think this combo of piano, vocals, and acoustic guitar is great here and definitely helps evoke emotions. I really enjoy melancholic-sounding songs, which makes me like the chord progression in this song a lot. In particular, that B minor chord in the chorus is very satisfying for some reason. I'm pretty sure this song is in B minor, so maybe it's just because it's the i chord, but it also doesn't really feel like it's trying to resolve on that chord, just serving as part of a downward progression? I don't know, I'm definitely no music theory expert lol. But yeah, I'm very fond of songs like this and I actually occasionally turn on this song when I'm in the mood for it. I just really enjoy this song, so I have to vote for it as much as it sucks to vote against The Black Song!

Memories of You > Kuroi Uta ~ The Black Song (International Version) > Scars of FAUNA > Id ~ Purpose > Imbrium > Fax Factory

I just noticed as I was typing out these rankings that "Uta" in Kuroi Uta's misspelled in the OP lol.

today i am feeling id purpose slightly less and fax factory slightly more than usual i guess

oops i probably should've said something about fauna/imbrium in bracketmaking i didn't expect it would be hard oops might flip

yes it's an unpopular take but i still think the other black song with eir aoi is better. also why does the vote thing say kuroi ita it should be kuroi uta. memories of you is the second best videogame song called memories of you (except the best one is actually called memories returned). anyway bad irrelevant commentary aside both of these are still actually pretty good and this is surprisingly close might also flip lol

Id ~ Purpose
Scars of FAUNA
Kuroi Uta ~ The Black Song (International Version)

I'm with the past performance on this one, Id is exactly at that gatekeeper level where I like it well enough but it falls just short of retiree-level (can't wait to see it fail retirement twice this year???)
ba ba da ba oh hey my rotisserie chicken is ready
Black Song is my favourite from Drakengard/Nier (This Silence Is Mine very close) and contender for my top VGM ever, but Memories of You turned out to be a great discovery as well (I tried very hard to acquire the mindset of having just witnessed an emotional ending sequence and watching the credits roll)

Very good day, they just keep getting better!

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Id ~ Purpose
Neotokyo - Imbrium
Drakengard 3 - Kuroi Uta ~ The Black Song (International Version)

Tough draw for Fauna, but Neotokyo too powerful even if Imbrium isn't one of my absolute favorites from it. Also a pretty tough draw for Memories of You, tougher even, maybe because there was a long moment where I was thinking I'd vote the other way before siding with Kuroi Uta, even if I think the Memories version is better (Ciphereverie on the OST, IIRC?) in a Kaine Salvation v Escape kind of situation. Definitely the best day so far though.

how did you guys let the black song retire and not the final song? did that retire last year? this is still nice though
nope ran into exsphere round 2 lol

Id ~ Purpose
Imbrium
Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version)

Id ~ Purpose is my 25th favorite in the contest! this has been in SO MANY TIMES for so many rounds that it is redundant to talk about it, not sure how much new I can say that I haven't said before, but my reaction HMM what is it? I like modulations, key changes "tonal center changes", whatever you want to call it, but particular when they're treated casually, not led up to. Stuff where if you're improvising along to it you have to change what scale you're using every 2 seconds for it to sound good at all. this is ALWAYS Moving where it is. I fall out of my chair 900 times in a row whenever this song is playing. Portions like :57 - 1:25 and 2:02 - 2:33 are made SO INTENSE by that kind of thing. I wouldn't say it's Lost Impact (Shadow The Hedgehog OST) on me, but because I've known it for so long and heard it so many times a lot of the surprise of every modulation that makes me FLOAT IN THE AIR gets a bit lost (though ironically I have more interest in the type of music this is than when I first heard this). but it's still impactful, still one of my favorites from a soundtrack I love. please stop nominating it for vgmc but also please actually retire this time I love you song...I love accordions and big orchestra choir songs with weird DESTINY chord changes that make me fall over

Fax Factory is my 118th favorite in the contest! Fax Factory is so silly : ) what the fuck : ) Honestly feel bad I do not like this more, I love Osamu Sato's stuff (my 3rd favorite in the contest is also composed by him and is a 10/10!) both his music and his bizarre games & other creative work. This one's just not really my thing at all beyond the superficial description of like "weird and I like weird", but I think the emotional zone it sits in is too...neutral for me? Like I can't feel anything from it the way I can other stuff from this game, doesn't really "create an atmosphere" or evoke any feelings in me at all... Especially as soon as 2:20 happens all the bizarreness and potential interpretation as trippy broken glitchy surreal world gets lost for me because that synth bass is just playing such a mundane simple layer to me. the song transforms from "cool weird WHOA wtf song" to "boring" in my head and i wish i didn't feel that way about it the instant that synth bass happens. If this were less frantic short-bar-length 4/4 gridded "the drums are too fast" and sit less in the tonally happy/goofy/simple zone, i'd be way more into this, but instead it's one of my lesser favorite things i know of from this game/composer. still 7/10 because it is weird enough for me to boost it as high as I have sorry for being "negative" even if this track is probably more meant for me than 90% of people and is going to have far more negativity expressed about it than it deserves. I'm glad something from this game got into the contest! I like the wacky violin!!!

Scars of FAUNA is my 55th favorite in the contest! Nekomata master's instrumentation makes me so excited!!!!!! Yay!! I am so happy : D wow!!!!!!!!!!!! 1:05 - 1:11 has those semi-detuned keyboard-ish slightly hard attack on a soft pad hits things whatever you want to call those. I LOVE that sound, one of my favorite signature nekomata things and in this track those chords feel so cool specifically as the backing to the melodic layer there. The section before that has chord changes that remind me of chloe or something, loottts of flipping between major/minor/dorian in a way that feels like forest with lots of fauna in it which is an imagery that is probably evoked to my brain due to "jrpg ost tropes" (GOOD). just these single changes in which notes in a scale are "allowed" winds up having a lot of power. Reminds me a lot of how certain pokemon songs are composed, in contrast to the very abrupt total changes in tonal center in Id, what scales work changing every 2 seconds like in Id, this is just changing one note in the "the notes that work" every chord and it's a lot "smoother", but still winds up having a very similar effect to me. although I consistently like the world-y side of his stuff no matter what, I think I like nekomata master when he is more funky/jazz fusiony (ie his elebits stuff) than when he is dancey, not that i dislike dance music but i feel like this would be a lot more enjoyable if it was not drivingly pulsating and didn't feel like every phrase was so short. like basically i'd like this a lot more if it didn't have the kick drum.

Imbrium is my 17th favorite in the contest! HERE WE GO. Breakbeat BOB polymeter cyberpunk minimalism steve reich drinking lots of edgy fluids from the bad city. The BOB(ba) elements make this for me more than anything, even if I love everything in the backing what bumps this up to my top 4 favorite neotokyo songs is everything over-the-barline the vocal layer's doing rhythmically. Mathematical desyncing rhythm stuff (polymetric manectric) is like the single way to excite me the most about any song rhythm-wise. At first it's just 9/4 3+3+3+3+3+3, groups of dotted eighths endlessly looping 6 notes and that's cool. the fact that it's all even spaced to have a new BOp every 3 16ths makes it feel like it's not just a different timesig from the rest but a different tempo, other parts solidify the "these are in 16ths" though. The :56 - 1:52 portion offsets it from itself...the pattern actually very subtly doesn't stay 9/4 once this section starts either, it's like [3+9+9+9+9+9]/4 and little things like that i notice only after listening to this 900 times are so cool. Neotokyo music's full of subtle new stuff I notice every time I listen to it again and i've been a fan of its music since 2010. I think 2:38 specifically not having the drums during it at the start is REALLY COOL because you just hear the polymetric layer isolated for the first time, feels more like a complete timesig change even though it's not. I just love the vocal bits desyncing and resyncing from themselves, all while being completely detached from the 4/4 layers of everything else. Oh right the drums are also not always 4-bar phrased sometimes they're in groups of 3 bars of 4/4, which DOES make it line up with the vocals eventually. ALSO VIBRAPHONE IS MY #1 FAVORITE INSTRUMENT AND THIS HAS VERY PROMINENT VIBRAPHONE. The atmosphere of this is remarkable but I feel that about every Neotokyo track, every single one brings me straight into what it intends to bring me into, some of the first music that comes to my brain whenever thinking about "music for cyberpunk thing", one thing I notice is neotokyo music never feels timbrally empty. Sometimes it's musically empty, which is clearly delibarate, intended to be atmosphere and there's lots of minimalism influence g

[...continued from above]

Kuroi Ita ~ The Black Song (International Version) (7/10) This song is really pretty : ) Drakengard 3 music takes a long time to really...get into itself. It's the kind of music where you can't just admit on your website "I didn't get past the first 30 seconds because i am a non-listener to the music so i'm voting for th other one" because I was like 'wait why am i giving this a high score' until i got like halfway through the track. The payoff was worth it. when drakengard 3 music is not fast I like it more than when it is fast especially at the parts that are fast in the slow songs like this one. All the echoy percussion in the background around ~3:00 is great, and I like how much the string layers in this feels like it would be music to some movie that I like that is animated and "magical". I think one of the strengths of drakengard 3 music (and nier) is all the metallic clanking sounds it explores. It's not like the jarring stabbing-you-with-a-knife form that can take like g-darius (even though I specifically like that about it). cases like this or like, the wretched automatons, it's just really...pretty! throwing scrap metal into an echoy grey dungeon chamber starts to feel like a beautiful Prismatic Prison (Sonic Shuffle OST), once dismal faint light beams come in vibrantly and turn into rainbows (I love pretentious) in the stained glass landscape (why is this piece of music so "colorful" feeling to me even though it is called "the black song" wtf song title)

Memories of You (5/10) I probably would've easily voted for this over drakengard 3 the black song years ago but it is not that time right now. The piano layers and filtered percussion effects are neat. um, what else is there in the song that i care about though (nothing) oops. I have really little to say here that's positive or negative i guess that's the definition of a 5 "i don't care", I think i might care about this a bit more if the instrumentation were different, but with just guitar and drums there's just not enough in the background to compliment anything on the foreground, and i'm not fascinated enough by the vocals to find interest in them either, though I do like them rhythmically. The most positive thing I have to say here is that I think it's cool how much this extrapolates out of a very simple motif, just 2 repeated notes and a space and two more repeated notes. that tiny thing has a bunch done with it throughout and it never really feels repetitive to me even though it IS literally repetitive .

oh one thing I forgot to mention in my post about Imbrium...it reminds me a lot of one of my favorite Umineko tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVP09lhSPm4

Has a similar looping 3+3+3 (9 over 4/4) rhythm layered on top and has a vaguely similar atmosphere too! I love music that feels the way these two things do to me...!

The Black Song

You know a song is bad if I'm voting for a snoozer like Id ~ Purpose over it.

What is this? A rhythm game song that's actually good?! What the hell is going on? Imbrium is a nice atmospheric piece -- genuinely nice -- but damn, Scars is taking it. Trdl voting for Id ~ Purpose and a rhythm game song. What a bizarre day. Wish this were a round 2 match, since I'd take either one over both songs in the first match!

The ToC match is sadistic. I love both of these songs! I can't guarantee my vote wouldn't swing the other way tomorrow. Gotta say, so far the Tournament of Champions is living up to its name pretty well.

Oh that thing about the lyrics is pretty cool! I guess that would have been Eir Aoi's songwriting decision then, assuming the international version just reuses her lyrics?

Actually, the wiki just confirmed that for me while I was writing this post, with two attempts at translating the broken Japanese included: https://drakengard.fandom.com/wiki/Kuroi_Uta
