Let's say you live on your own, and have to pay rent, utilities etc and after all of that, all you have remaining for food is $80. What do you buy throughout the month to last you?

Pasta, rice, beans, frozen vegetables, ground beef, eggs, cereal, milk, ramen. If I have some extra, some canned goods.

Only meats and dairy get bad here for price. I can stretch meals at about $23 a week. Meal plan if I'm simply left with $80 at the end.

Raw fruits/vegetables except for apple and a few others don't fill or last for the month unless I'm bulk cooking and really meal portioning.

I had to do it for some time too. The trick is to buy cheap ground beef, and make meatballs out of them to toss in there.

Let's see, like you have nothing in the cupboard levels?

Beans, sugar, flour, yeast, eggs, seasonings, rice, butter/oil. Those little broth cubes.

That should be enough to last you a while. Get some cheese and maybe some form of alternate protein. If you can you can buy a whole chicken (5 lbs is like...6 bucks?) and break it down into parts, make a bone broth out of it and use that to flavor your chicken and beans to make baked beans.

You can make bread. I'd probably say a multivitamin if you can too. It's possible to do it though. Not gonna have too much variety but you can still make some decent dishes and have more variety than shiddy ramen lol.

Flour isn't too much but like 10 dollars for a 12 pound bag. That lets you do a lot of stuff with sugar flour yeast salt and butter, bread, cookies, crackers. Throw in some cocoa powder and you've added chocolate variety.

Financial reasons. I spent most of my adult life being extremely poor as I went to college. I actually worked full time for my state university to get reduced tuition. It took me six years but I finished undergraduate with no debt. Not many people can say they did that without someone else paying for it for them.

The one local/regional grocery store chain has a 5/$19.95 deal on hamburger, packs of chicken breast (2 to a pack), various pork and other beef cuts and packages of 'junk' foods like hot dogs. So I think I could make it for the month even if I just had to pick from those choices.

this

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
cheapest meat and cheese sandwiches
beans
rice
eggs(depending price or I'm in chicken land)
ground beef
Ramen
Bananas on the discount about to expire.

Honestly I'd have to really check the prices because some of that can be cheap and reused a lot, like a pack of meat and cheese and bread can be like 5 really crappy meals and when you out of meat, grilled cheese sandwiches. Peanut Butter and Jelly can easily be 10 sandwiches or more

Ramen is terrible, but dirt cheap.

Beans and rice are cheap obviously.

Eggs, at least the cheapo brand can probably fit in here. Ground beef is a maybe on this, but it can be found cheap enough. 3 lbs for under 10.

Honestly, I expect to have the shits from this diet, and for it suck. but I think it's doable with a little bit of planning.

Local/regional grocery chain here went from advertising large eggs for .99 a dozen in their ad and bumped them up to 2/$5. They already sell them for $1.39-1.79 on "sale" most weeks and I really wait for the under a buck pricing cuz to me over a buck for eggs is absurd.

I wasn't aware.

Eggs are one item I'll splurge for the good local stuff, at least most of the time. I can really tell a difference. So I haven't gotten cheapo eggs in a while and was still thinking of the .99 cents a dozen.

K, here's what I'm going with.

I'm going to be making a ton of rice. I like it anyway and it's great with garlic salt. No beans though. That shit will fuck me up.

I'll be getting a few dozen eggs, the cheapest I can find.

Thankfully I have a shit ton of ramen and about 25 cans of sardines from when before I moved so I won't have to go up to $80 for this or even the next month.

I'm thinking the meal plan will be a lot of rice with ground turkey. I might pour the entire 1lb of ground turkey into it or only half. Probably only half.

I'll eat one can of sardines during the day so I can get some kind of real nutrition, and another during my lunch at work instead of buying those 3 dollar chicken sanwiches everyday like I used to.

I've got a list of stuff you guys mentioned with some price estimates. It's been a while since I've bought some of these kind of things so I don't remember exact prices.

Ramen is like $4.00 per case which has like 12 cups.
A jar of peanut butter is probably like 3.50
A big bag of rice is like $4.00 at Food4Less ( I think the real price was 2.65 but I coudl be wrong)
Pasta box $2.00
Bread $3.00
Eggs $3.00
Big bag of potatos $3.00'
Ground turkey 2 1lb packs for $6.00 at Food4Less
10 cans of Beach Cliff sardines for $10.00

This puts me at about $41.00. I'm not entirely sure how long this would all last me since this is my first time living alone. Myabe 2 weeks thanks in large part to the rice.

Then I'll still have about $100 or so bucks leftover which I can use for entertainment and or more food.

one thing I sometimes do with ramen

once the noodles are boiling, drop in some eggs and then either just let it cook whole, or scramble it really fast cause it will cook rapidly as soon as it touches the water. if you stir it up as soon as you drop the eggs in, they will turn into basically scrambled eggs mixed around the noodles. then sometimes I also add hot sauce like sriracha which can find in the ethnic aisle at most grocery stores
