Would be pretty cool to have a bus when everyone else has a car. Finding a parking spot would be a damn nightmare, though...

Shit was embarrassing as a self conscious high schooler.

I walked to elementary and middle because it was like 2 blocks away each. I rode the absolutely dreaded NYC MTA buses for high school.

Yo, I can't even tell you how uncompromising these assholes were. In 11th grade, there was a huge strike going on so all the orange and green lines were dead. Only blue, which was city owned.

We would get in trouble for being late. The buses that could get us there would pass us on the stops because they were full. I'm talking 7 buses passing before one would have room enough to squeeze in.

Shit was so abusive.

I didn't get a car until senior year, but people in my area didn't have a lot of money in general so it would be silly to look down on a high schooler for not having one.

Also, parking on campus was a total nightmare, as was trying to leave at the end of the day

This as well. Only like a handful of people drove and the lot was like 6 spaces and we had 5000 students.

Our buses were free and NYC traffic is indeed a nightmare, though there was a straight line shortcut straight to my high school by car.

Our school had a decent-sized lot, but the assigned spaces were only for approved seniors (had to go through an approval process prior to the school year, maintain grades, and pay a fee). Most of the parking was along a 2-lane road entering campus, and it was first-come first-serve so if you couldn't get a spot you were shit outta luck

I'll admit, I always felt a tad embarrassed when I'd be the oldest passenger on the bus. 18, and potentially riding with folks as young as 12 - yeah, it definitely felt weird to me.

In hindsight, I wish I had driven to school. Too bad real life didn't permit me such liberties.

Damn, that was simply not allowed in high school. Shit, college had the exact same issue. You couldn't have a car on campus unless you were a junior or senior and even then, you had to pay a bunch of fees and apply super early. Parking there was like 200-300 spaces, but the college had 40,000 students, which made it impossible and they'd give you $80 tickets which stopped you from attending the next semester unless you paid. Commuters had a separate lot almost a mile from campus and required a bus anyway.

Damn, goes to show how different things were outside of NYC. Pretty much everybody had to ride a bus. Even parents dropping off was very rare.

Worst was truancy. They used to harass the fuck out of us because as an upperclassmen, our classes ended around 11-1 (10 for me in 12th grade). You could be in front of your house and a NYPD van would pull up and take you back to school. Once you hit 18, they couldn't do anything then. I remember me and my friend got caught and were being taken back to school. They saw a 4th or 5th grader and started harassing her about why she was outside. I was just like "why am I being treated like a kid at 18?".

Driver cop got shooked fast. Asked to see our IDs and since it was my friend's 18th, wished him Happy Birthday and told us to get the fuck out the van.

my cousin had a car in junior and senior years. we went to the same school and lived 2 house away from each other. tbh i couldnt afford the driving school and all the car stuff. my brothers pushed my parents for their driving a car like gas insurance a car etc. i didnt want to burden my parents. i felt i didnt have to. my cousins mom actually told my cousin to bring me to school too so that didnt help as he felt restricted in his new freedom in driving.

he took me to school then some times left me after school. he got tired of driving me around. luckily i had friends who take me home some of those times i was left. if i was left with no ride, i had to take the public bus home to a bus stop and walk home. it wasnt a big deal for me.
