They always go the route of Daredevil or Geordi La Forge where they are "blind" but yet actually can see fine in a pragatic sense and in fact see better than everyone else in the story.

In fact shouldn't everyone on the Enterprise wear Geordi Visors? They seem superior to human eyes, they can scan all sorts of data, levels of radiation etc and even let you know when people are lying or not.

I think the Grandfather from DinoRiders was blind but he wasn't really a hero.

There was a blind Templar dude in Dragon Age Origins who looked like Richard O'Brien and helped people but he died after like 76 seconds and no one ever mentions him again

There was that guy from Becker too. He was actually blind. Not sure if he was a hero though or just a dude. I remember one episode where his girlfriend breaks up with him, takes all his stuff and then leaves a goodbye note for him to read. That bitch was evil and probably broke all sorts of laws.

I dunno, I'm not blind obviously but it just seems odd/self-defeating to me to give the character an interesting handicap that might create challenges in day to day life but then write it into the plot that he doesn't actually have the handicap at all in a practical sense.

Is there anyone obvious I am missing?

okay?

But why write a hero who is a blind and then go "Actually they see better than everyone else"?

Seems less interesting than a blind hero who doesn't see better than everyone else because they are blind.

Imagine if they made a TV series of Unbreakable and gave Samuel L. Jackson cyborg impants so he was stronger and more powerful than everyone else and regularly saved the day.

Wouldn't that defeat the narrative? And the raise the question of why not give everyone cyborg implants?

Does Mamoru Hijikaka count? While he has tech sunglasses that plug into his brain to allow echo location to work, it does require sound and can be blocked out by loud noises or other interference and he still kicks major ass without them on.

There's an 80s movie with Rutger Hauer IIRC where he played a blind vagabond swordsman in modern day USA. Think the character was called Nick

EDIT: Found it.
