And can stalkers use it to find out around where you are , or only if you give out clues ?

In the sense that it probably rakes your data and sells it to the lowest bidder? Yes, it's probably equal to Facebook in that regard.

Ok, it's an instant messaging app, like WhatsApp or Telegram.

Except in addition to one-on-one chats, you can also have group chats. And you can set up entire "servers" with multiple chat rooms and voice chat channels.

It's popular in the gaming community - you'll have a message channel where the leaders put out important updates or upcoming events, you'll have a general chat where people can talk about the game, you'll have an off-topic chat, and then you'll have voice chats for different groups to communicate easily without having to worry about in-game voice clarity or support.

My worry is being stalked to location , meta data , or gaining access to inside my phone memory . These are things my dad warned me about getting into internet

Do you have a known stalker?

Like most things, if you're worried about that, use a different e-mail address for registration, use a different username than you normally would, enable any privacy settings that limit who can interact with you, and don't give out information all willy-nilly to strangers.

data indefinitely retained server-side and access to it by third parties is my main concern

location is implicit without a proxy, and i prefer to use apps in my browser where possible to mitigate access to the phone's memory

If you want a 'safe' social media app, I'd use something like Kik.

years back i recall stumbling on an irc channel for greek protestors and activists during the turbulence of the early 2010s

while irc is more of a protocol than a social media app, based on what i was told in the channel, there are some pretty solid security measures that can be taken when using irc

i'd also argue its advantage over other forms of communication online (kik included) is its decentralized nature, comparable to the email protocol
