Like the title says, nerdy interests such as video games and anime were never meant to be genuinely fun. Said interests were only meant to be coping mechanisms to help those suffering from social rejection and that they experienced in their lives, such as being friendless, unpopular, and low status all throughout college, which is supposed to be the most fun time of one's life.

You don't see gorgeous women having nerdy interests at all. The reasoning behind it is that such gorgeous women are of the highest social status, very popular, and have thousands of friends, whether it be social media such as Instagram or it be in the real world. As such, they're invited to exclusive college parties, bar none the most fun activity in life (due to its insane popularity among college students), and they can do it all the time, so they surely don't enjoy measly, low-status nerdy interests.

However, you see tons of ugly men resorting to nerdy interests. The reasoning behind that is that such ugly men are seen as of the lowest social status, very unpopular, have been ostracized by almost everyone, primarily the popular crowd, where all the gorgeous women are, and have very few, if any friends, with abysmal social media following. As a result, such ugly men are unable to go to exclusive college parties due to not being invited to them, and I can only feel sorry for them and relate to them as they resort to nerdy interests such as video games and anime solely to cope with tremendous amounts of social rejection and not being invited to such.

In short, nerdy interests were never meant for genuinely enjoyment. They're meant solely for social rejects to cope with their social rejection.

Actually, funnily enough, games are designed to mimic war and hunting. In modern society, war isn't like it used to be and hunting isn't required to live unless you are like a professional fisherman on a boat.
Historically these were things men did. Go to war, protect family, go hunting. We see this division in primitive tribes still today.

Whereas women actually enjoying shopping. Some, but not as many enjoy cooking. And then there is the so called motherly instincts.
Like, tell me you don't know alot of girls who are giddy to go shoe shopping.
In a way, this mimics some things women did while men were at war or hunting. Except back then they were sowing the clothes or stitching the blankets etc.

Of course these are generalized and there is always outliers.

However, lots of girls game today. War and hunting aren't male exclusive, especially today.
I daresay you will see a correlation however between women who love being mothers and low interest in gaming.
Also, dudes who hunt irl alot likely have less interest in games.
