"Competition" uh huh. Don't be obtuse, you know that's not why Epic is reviled.

I think the anger is a few of the games are becoming "Epic Exclusives." so they're only available on Epic and not anywhere.

So, it's just a case of games being restricted onto a PC platform.

I agree with folks getting annoyed but it's more to do with what Steam started. I mean...it's a PC game and if a PC game can ONLY be played on Steam or Epic and can't be downloaded on its own then that kind of pisses on the idea of a PC game. Steam and Epic have kind of become "Consoles for the PC" which seems pointless when games can be played on PC without either...I've never understood the point of Steam when it's just a middleman between my PC and games.

So, from that point, it seems shitty that playing on PC means you need to get a certain "platform" to play them on which is the very console stuff that PC players want to get away from. I can see them not liking this since it leads to PC games...which were available to all PC players...now only being available on these platforms. And that sucks and leads to less games available to less people.

But Steam started this by creating an idea of a "console on a PC"...not Epic.

Don't be obtuse, you know that's not why Epic is reviled.

I actually have no clue what this is. I assume it's something stupid where gamers blame them for trying to make actual money by switching the types of games they make?...that's the #1 reason why people unreasonably hate a game company so I'm guessing that's it?

I don't seem to recall GOG pulling the rug out from under people's feet and making games exclusives when they hadn't been marketed as such

No, but there are some key differences here.

GOG stands for Good Old Games. They specialized in old abandonware games that were prohibitively expensive or difficult to find hard copies of. Steam did not sell these games initially, and even to this day there's not a lot of overlap between PC games released pre-2006 on Steam and GOG. Even when there *is* overlap, the folks behind GOG generally do a fantastic job implementing community patches and post-release configuration tweaks to ensure that the old game you bought will run "out of the box" on your modern computer; generally the same title on Steam is *not* going to have those, so it becomes your responsibility to look around online for the necessary configurations and fixes.

GOG also does not require any DRM for the majority of games sold there, meaning you don't need an additional launcher running on your computer to play the games. You just download the .exe and install and it works.

And even when GOG *did* start selling modern releases and competing with Steam, it never made any unfair bids for exclusivity. Even now that's not the case. I think there's ONE CDPR game (CDP owns GOG, that's where they started) which is the Gwent collectible card game. All other Witcher games and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 are going to be released on Steam, too.

Epic has none of that. It has a broken client, a broken storefront, and really crappy business practices.

Even if a game historically was exclusive to Steam, you didn't have to purchase your key through Steam. There are dozens of legitimate shops and digital storefronts out there where you can buy a game if you're worried about your money going to Valve.

When EGS launched its storefront, this was not the case - you were *required* to purchase the game through Epic. I don't know if that's the case any more or not, though.

Other than their own games like Portal, L4D, etc? Not that I know of. If there are any, it was the Developer's choice.

that first paragraph is pretty interesting. gog might not have been considered at all to be competition to steam when it first came out. the way i go about my pc purchases makes them competition, for me. is it on gog? yes? gog it is, then.
