My favorite was 3, despite the awful music and obvious lack of polish, for three main reasons:

1. It was my first exposure to fantasy-that-is-actually-scifi-in-disguise and the relevant plot twist blew my mind.

2. The generations system was really nice. They should have done more with it (there are pretty much only two generation 3 stories) but in particular, Sean's story did cool things with the player agency.

3. Less mazey. I didn't like how complicated the mazes were in 2.

Phantasy Star Portable was cool. The sequel was even more fun because it had online multiplayer and not many psp games had that

PS2 is my favorite, but 4 is the best. I could never get into 3 or 1 that much

The AGES redo of Phanstasy Star 1 on Switch is really nice.
The translation still sucks, but 4x money/xp is great, and there's on-screen maps this time.
