You could argue that nobody cared about Aquaman which is why few complained.

But I get the feeling if they made Aquaman black, there would have been a shitstorm.

It's time to face the truth. Many internet racists aren't the full blown "only whites matter, everyone not white is bad" like the KKK or white supremacists. They just don't like black people. Every other race is fine to them.

The basic answer is:

People want an actor who plays the role well and suits the character. Jason Mamoa is a popular actor from Game of Thrones with a high-tier physique and a love of nerdy shit, so nobody (or very few people) had any problem with him playing Aquaman. Most people appreciated Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin in the Ben Affleck Daredevil, too.

Color isn't the root of the issue, it's the 'feeling' of the actor/actress in the role. I don't have any prior experience with the Witcher, so I don't have any issue with any of the casting, personally.
