When I say this, is not to disrespect the actress ,but Leia have died in the Last Jedi. It was kind of sad looking at them tape together her parts in ROS. Just not have Luke fade away at the end of TLJ and he could have filled in that role.

I think due to the timing of her death and the footage they had available, they couldn't edit in a death that would work in TLJ.

Being able to write the story of ROS around the unused footage helped.

Though that scene early on where the bridge gets blown up and she's sucked out into space made me think "wow holy fuck THAT'S how they're gonna kill her off? It's been like 12 minutes" before she Mary Poppinsed her way to safety

I would rather they have just handwaved her disappearance in 9 than play madlibs with a dead woman's last lines and stitch together a death scene.

they (unceremoniously) killed off Akbar that way. And he's a pretty major character to the SW universe.
