Aside from the invisible walls. Especially the one in the Clock.

ridiculously fun back then and even now it's still pretty good. Comparing it to Mario Odyssey, this game is light years better in terms of puzzle world design and it's actually a challenge.

That Christmas, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire had been released.

My dad and brother let me open a gift for Christmas Eve. They gave me a box that was about the size of an N64 game and it had the most decadant wrapping, and then they gave me a box that was about the same size but it was wrapped in newspaper.

Of course being a dumb 8 year old I went for the fancy wrapping. It was an RF Adapter for the N64 so I could play it at my mom's house... they got a kick out of it >_> They felt bad though - SW SOTE was in the other one.

I went in a babbages or electronics boutique and the N64 kiosk had him in the castle at the one bowser stage (first one I beleive) and moving him was so crazy, it felt like nothing ever before, then as mario went forward the painint of peach turned into bowser and the floor gives out, it was insane.

Am I crazy or was the kiosk version of the game much different than the actual game that launched with the system?

Honestly...I don't think it aged all that well, but it was iconic and a huge advance in the world of gaming.

Yeah, nothing can really replace that first leap into 3D. Unless we ever create true VR. But true VR is inhibited by the same thing that inhibits us from developing true cyborg limbs: we just can't figure out how to directly connect our brains to a computer.

The day I got my N64 with Mario 64, I spent literal hours exploring the area outside. I swam constantly because no game had ever given me that much freedom and control before. It was amazing. I still remember that feeling.

Obviously people have fond memories of it as their first experience with 3d gaming, but I didn't play it until it came out for DS and loved it then, too.

It was one of the biggest singular steps in gaming tech, so of course the initial wow factor was huge.

The game's been completely outclassed by almost every 3D Mario game released after it, though. Which should be expected as Mario 64 was practically experimental tech. Saying M64 is the best 3D Mario game would be like saying SMB1 is the best 2D Mario.

I think that's fair. It was really the first time a lot of us had any exposure to an actual 3D world, and if you were a kid when this was released this was probably the biggest thing in gaming you had seen so far.

I still vividly remember going to rent a game from the local video store. They got in the system and games early and the owners son was playing it behind the counter (they had a big television set up where they would run movies all day or employees could play games when it wasn't busy). Seeing Mario run around that castle for the first time just left me stunned. I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing.
