I'm playing it now, over 50 hours in.

I really enjoy the gameplay flow but there is way too much to it.

I think the things I dislike most about it are...

1) They make it really difficult to 100% every area you encounter if you're trying to support one specific side of the War (and honestly I don't even know if it makes a difference).

2) They totally fudged up the modern day story with Layla. They had a really good set up with Origins and then they kind of shit all over it by jumping ahead a certain amount of time in Odyssey. Should have just done the Desmond thing and kept it all one continuous modern day story.

3) It's not really an Assassin's Creed game. It's got like some of the symbols of the Creed in it and of course the artifacts and... that's about it. Maybe they expand on it more, I'm not that far into the story to be honest just doing a lot of side content.

As far as I know it makes no difference. The Athens vs Sparta content is purely a means for you to gain resources and gear.

Typically I'll just wait for big battles to pop up and fight for the attacking side to get better rewards. Also if a quest is taking me by a fort I'll steal war supplies because they are usually good sources of money and materials

And it's literally called AC Odyssey. As in referencing the long ass journey Odysseus took. Not AC Short Story.

What I will say, though, is that my first AC game was Unity, and I never finished that. So I have limited attachment to the overarching plot of the series. I come to these games for historical Hitman, not the sci-fi ish battle for the fate of the world.

tbh when it's all the same and there's no real point to it, I think it's a valid complaint.

For example, Odyssey kept the "Hidden Tomb" feature from Origins (in Odyssey they're just tombs of 'famous' mythical people like Ajax and Orion), but in Odyssey they serve no purpose other than just giving you a free ability point. In Origins at least the tombs contained a ton of lore (ex. one of them was for the Pharaoh who founded the Order of the Ancients, which you find out by reading inscriptions on the wall), and of course some of the tombs also contained an Ancient Mechanism, which further added to the Isu lore.

There's also the issue with the sheer size of the world. It's just overwhelming unless it's the only game you're playing for a couple months.

I have it waiting in my backlog and will probably start it next month. The amount of content definitely gives me some trepidation because I always tell myself I'm not going to be a completionist in AC games and then that goes out the window once I start playing map cleanup. I'll be stuck on this one for months

The problem is, it's a series about exploration and unlocking side content, so... it's kind of annoying that so much side content is pointless.

There was a lot in Origins but it was better managed.

Honestly theres no real overarching plot imo. And really, while it could have been interesting, they never really managed to take advantage of that potential. I think my favorite future-y plot beat happened Assassins Creed 1 & 2 SPOILERS at the end of AC2. The first games ending was pretty neat too, I guess. After that they lost me.

But yeah I too was always most interested in the historical MGS gameplay, which btw Im glad sneaking is back in the series because that was missing in one of them that I played lol.

The murder mysteries in Unity are probably my favorite AC side activity ever. They were pretty basic and most could be solved in 10-15 minutes, but I really liked them

Does it still count as optional content if the game basically forces you into it by level gating certain areas of the game, which you can't reach just by doing the main story missions?

The story also forces you to upgrade your ship to be able to actually finish the required naval combat sections. You'll never have enough resources to do that if you don't do any of the side content.

Not to mention the sheer amount of times you're told to go to 'X' fort to kill a certain enemy which becomes significantly easier if you clear the fort so you might as well do it.

I guess Odyssey is technically more polished but to me it's nowhere near Origins. Story and characters are what's most important to me and Odyssey just doesn't have that. Meanwhile they knocked it out the park with Bayek and Aya.

I did exactly the same thing once I figured out the battles part. Attacking side = better rewards. No loyalty, straight mercenary.

Yeah I think they went a little too far with the 'choice' system. Like having the 'option' to either completely remove or never even add certain characters to the story obviously would reduce their overall impact and strength of the character, because the story has to be able to go on if they're not even there.

eston posted...

Things being made artificially "relevant" because of developer choices doesn't mean they're not pointless.

Even the 'choice' system is ultimately pointless because the ending of the "Family" storyline you get based on your choices doesn't fundamentally effect the game.

Kassandra is bae though.

Also while the map is huge, its way better than Origins imo. There were whole areas in Origins that had like nothing in them. And most of the areas were just desert.

Story-wise, Origins was better, but almost everything else swings towards Odyssey imo. Combat, gameplay, etc.

There's some things I enjoy more in Odyssey than Origins such as upgrading your ship instead of upgrading your gear. That being said I enjoy Origins more because it had less content, less systems in place, and an overall story that was told well.

I think with Odyssey they could have dropped the mercenary system and had a branch or 2 less for the Cult of Kosmos.
