It probably would if it was a religion focused area of the forums, but it isn't. Maybe just don't discuss religion when you are a minority among people who generally don't believe in a deity.

Many previous polls and whatnot show a lot of CE isn't religious. It's not the best place for it.

The internet overall feels like it has a more atheist vibe. It doesn't really come off surprising when communities don't care if you get edgy about peoples religion online. Didn't the atheist online use to be even way more tryhard tho? Like you'd only have 1 or 2 people max in each community that would be for respecting peoples beliefs. Or am I trippin?

It's because religion brings out the worst in people, the churches are being outed for vile and disgusting practices, and people are finally coming around to realize most of it is hypocritical bullshit. It's destroying itself slowly, but surely.

Maybe if it was about the belief and the relationship instead of judgement and money hungry scumbags, it would be in a better place right now.

Oh yeah. As an edgy 14 year old atheist in 2008-2009, the atheist shit was bad enough that I rethought my position on atheism while not believing in God or respecting Christianity.

I think it was synonymous with the anti-PC crowd at the time, because the PC crowd of the 90's and 2000's was the religious right. But as time went on, this came to encompass your standard, shitty "get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich" douchebags, and "God isn't real and I'm not going to hell for being deliberately offensive" turned into people actually getting offended and up in arms about feminism and shit. I'd go as far as to call them proto-incels - they preceded PUAs, who preceded "meninists", who preceded incels.

I support this tho. Know your audience and don't try pushing it on people. They have the motive and right to strongly state their believes if that's the case. Otherwise, it just comes off super corny when they just diss religion for hip points. Blasphemy is only cool if you're a middle schooler that literally just adapted your beliefs.

That's perfectly fine, but the expectation that people aren't going to lash out, especially on CE, is unrealistic.

I saw this thing the other day that someone wrote and I think it sums up a lot of the "edgy atheist" movement of that time frame. Definitely brought back someone pretty bad flashbacks of CE at that time

The thing that I hate about atheism as a movement is that it doesnt just want to critique the hegemony of Western Christianity, it wants to kill spirituality. There is no joy, there is nothing about it that isnt founded in a pessimism that sees itself as so self-important that it cannot exist outside of destruction. The face of atheism is a white male disgruntled ex-Christian who decided that if he cant find joy in religion, then nobody else can. Theres a leftover missionary sensibility to enlighten people to atheism that exposes itself as racist, antisemitic, and islamophobic, thats ultimately not unlike the dominance exerted through colonial Christianity

Yeah, ultimately that brand of atheism is "religion isn't real and you're a fucking moron if you believe otherwise, and as such I don't owe you any of my time - by the virtue of my beliefs, I am superior to you". It was, like many stupid fucking internet cults, a bunch of short-sighted, self-important assholes who felt small in their own lives, who used their beliefs to put themselves on top and give themselves a power boost - which they would turn around and abuse to try and make other people feel small.

Atheism was touted as anti-religion, but it used the same tenets of religion to shame and belittle others while putting practitioners at the top of the food chain. Those involved with online atheism in the 2000's were no better than the fundie douchebags they claimed to be fighting against, just in the opposite direction.

I honestly believe that it's this type of person who would later go on to propagate "red pill" beliefs, which would then spiral into gamergate types and people who cried "censorship" when Steam wouldn't host Hatred on their service, among other types.

I can see all of this. The last part kind of loses me due to lack of insight I have on that community. But I definitely got the superiority vibe back in the day. You'd be surprised how open minded religious people can be in modern times. That one kid in the Mormon episode of Southpark fuckin nailed it when he puts Stan in his place at the end. When you show that kind of judgement on someone just for being religious, you literally have the same personality trait that you think you're fighting against.

The third paragraph seems real to me, but I understand if it feels like it's going off the rails. Ultimately, that side of things are a lot more biased towards my feelings on things in the here and now, whereas I saw online atheism through a more neutral view as a teenager.

Like, The Amazing Atheist getting kicked out of restaurants for being an obnoxious, self-important jackass who would like yell atheist talking points in public with little to no provocation - I hold a similar sort of disdain for a lot of red pill types, who I feel are the next evolution. But that's taking the subject into more contemporary territory, while we're discussing online atheism as it existed last decade. Again, that's my bias getting in the way - I'll chill out about it now.

I think you might of took my post different than I intended. I wasn't saying you weren't right. I was just stating that I literally know nothing about the Red Pill community. Half the time I forget what Red Pill even means outside of the Matrix reference. After the most basic understanding, I clocked out of caring lol.
