Religion, even extreme expression, should not be the motivating factor for the antagonist in a Carrie reboot. That is low hanging fruit in 2019. A lot of people already accept that there are a lot of nutcases with religious views, especially ones who are anti gay, anti transgender and so on. That wasnt the case back in the 70s, when Carrie was published. It was more controversial, at least back then, to cast Christianity, for example, in a bad light.

Id rather see them work out an antagonist(s) today as someone more ideal and acceptable in thought and appearance. Jordan Peele did this recently in Get Out, when he showed a family that was very educated, accepting and progressive, but their true selves were deceptive, manipulative and violent.

But that's the book. You shouldnt deviate from the book. I hate movies that change book details to make the movie appeal to today's audience. Just adapt the damn book.

Why bother remaking it for the millionth time if not going to do anything new with it?

Right. Because the real enemy of protected minorities are progressive, educated white liberals.

Thats not the argument being made, regardless if it is or isnt true. Carrie is a work of fiction. Usually, you dont want those stories to be predictable, or else its viewed as lazy or uncreative.

It's the fourth time they've made a Carrie movie. I think the ship has both sailed and sunk on being lazy and uncreative.

Why not just do something else original if you want to deviate that much from the original story? Carrie's parents were freaky religious nuts, even to other Christians. The reason she was born, her lack of knowledge of her body, and her personality are all related to that. That's not even getting touching the part where they actually want to make her a transgender/minority too. This is a small town in Maine, how far out do they want her?

The Carrie story has been told three times in a visual medium, and is fundamentally about a teenager being driven to the limit by the taunts of her fellow students and her buttfuck insane mom. The miserable life that Carrie leads can be showcased through different lenses - bigotry can be one facet of a tormented life that drives people to incredible violence, and a PoC or trans Carrie wouldn't be that far removed from a white Carrie.

That's not to say that the movie could or should fall back to bigotry as the main motivating force, just that along with the torment that comes with being the lowest person on the pecking order, it's not that far removed to add bigotry to the mix.

Atheists don't tend to have a problem with LGBTQ+. You could, however, make the argument that religious people are only religious because it justifies their bigotry, but then what's the difference?

I know of many, many on this board alone who disprove that. Bigotry happens regardless. It's honestly pretty natural, but that doesn't make it ok.

She is at the end of the book. She just goes around hosing the entire town because, fuck it.
I thought she wasnt doing it on purpose and was terrified throughout it. Although I may just be remembering the original movie. I know that in the latest remake Carrie goes in full rage-mode.
