I see it like this: in the past before the Air Force the Army and Navy had an air force of their own within their own branches. The Air Force was created as a separate branch to become more specialized. In that sense the Space Force is a more dedicated branch for space related measures like security.

I mean it does sound silly on paper but China and Russia has been advancing their space presence in the past few years and is competing with our satellites. Satellites can do all sort of control from cyber and missile guidance.

Not to mention that space in general is going to be a huge sector in regards to upcoming plans for space tourism and future research etc.

I still think it's a gimmick. We already have those people in place and trained at AFSC.
