Btw the answer is that the triangle is 40 and the square is 60.

I trial and error'd it though, there's probably a better way to do it that a first grader in China knows.

The fact that it's for grade 1 when most Western grade 1 students are still learning basic addition and subtraction.

This is why we need to catch up to Asian levels of STEAM education.

Science
Technology
Engineering
Arts (Commercial)
Mathematics.

We are SOOO far behind every 1st & 2nd world Education system when our 1st graders can't even do that.

Ah.

Really, I think it's more ridiculous that our students here in the West are behind. We ought to catch up.

The info given to you is that a square and triangle equal 100 units, and that six triangles are equal to four squares, making the squares 50% larger. So 1x + 1.5x = 100

But, yeah, I assume China drills kids on math like this day after day so that they have no choice but to pick up on it from exposure.

It outright tells you that 6 triangles = 4 squares so after that its just a matter of using fractions which isnt that tough but might be a little above a 1st graders level.

You can either solve it with Algebra or just work through it mentally like a puzzle because it's pretty straight forward. I'm guessing they're supposed to do the latter.

3 triangles is one ball.
4 squares is 2 balls, so 2 squares is one ball.
1/3 of a ball+1/2 of a ball is 100. So 2 Balls+3 Balls is 600 balls. One ball is 120.
Triangle is then 40. Square is 60.

I also want to add that the take you guys have about oh they're just learning addition and subtraction isn't good for education. The problem isn't when they are learning stuff, but how they're learning it. Ball and triangle problems like this teach them how to reason out problems in their head. It gives them a sense for how numbers work. It's one the common core thing they've been trying to push is good. The "math is math" crowd who insists on plug and chuck methods or following set algorithms are doing kids no favors.

A decade ago it was becoming quite the scandal. Sadly we seem to have sunk further into "hard work is a conservative plot and intellectualism is better rooted in understanding social structures than math" since then.

As someone working there right now, I can't say I agree with that. These kids are overworked. Class from 730am to 5pm, 2+ hours of homework daily, numerous tutoring classes, etc.

Whenever I ask a student what they will be doing during their weekend or a holiday, it is always "homework".

Boy were they wrong when the kids on the other side of the world is this far ahead of us at 1st grade already.

The funny thing is this completely flips the script. Sometime in China's history, education became all about social sciences so then they fell behind like crazy technologically. Then other countries came in and raided all their shit.

I can just see it now...

*There is a food shortage and people are starving!"
SJWs: This is all the rich people's fault!
Scientist: *Finds way to make more food and people are fed*

triangle + square = 100
3 triangle = circle
2 circle = 4 square

so 1 circle = 2 square = 3 triangle
1 square = 3/2 triangle = 1.5 triangle
2.5 triangle = 100
1 triangle = 100/2.5 = 40
