...should take precedence over other high-value items you intend to buy because you need something to protect all that other expensive shit you're going to buy later?

You're an idiot. Buy the gun later if you "must have it." You already have enough guns now, spend the money on things your family needs. The gun isn't going to provide any benefit for the family but groceries will

I have a cousin (by marriage) that I have had this talk with more than once. If he doesn't buy the gun, he will buy more beer than usual because he "earned it." The 5 DWIs would say he hasn't

The premise works on the assumption you do not have arms to begin with, try again.

The argument is like getting any insurance; if you haven't got it then you should get it before you need it.

73 years old, disciple-level martial artist, never felt I needed to carry a gun for protection. I enjoy target shooting, used to do fancy gun work- fast draw, trick shot, gun spinning, etc. I like guns, I'm proficient as a pistolera, just don't need to carry one.

So if protecting your other stuff is the justification for buying a gun, it seems a pretty weak argument to me. Just something else to get stolen. Or, if you carry it and aren't extremely well trained in both law and shooting skills and safety, something to get in a lot of trouble with.

A gun is not a magic wand, like it seems on TV, it's a tool for poking holes in things, period.

A gun should be used for self defense

for valuables Id rather just get them insured, especially since a robbery is most likely to take place when you arent home

Well, here in California we have a waiting period for a gun anyway, so you can buy the other stuff while youre waiting.
