I think the Hat cares less about what you are and more about what you value. It explains why family members tend to all be in the same house: they were all taught by the same parents. Neville is a coward, but he's been told his whole life about how brave his parents were. Hermione is extremely intelligent, but she brushes that off in the first book:

Hermione's lip trembled, and she suddenly dashed at Harry and threw her arms around him. "Hermione!" "Harry - you're a great wizard, you know." "I'm not as good as you," said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him. "Me!" said Hermione. "Books! And cleverness! There are more important things friendship and bravery and oh Harry be careful!"

Blaise Zabini's mother was famously beautiful. So much so that she had seven husbands and none of the later ones even seemed to care that all of her previous ones had died and happened to leave her a massive inheritance. So he could probably get it.

All of the Blacks and Malfoys are also described as good looking. Harry, the poor closeted boy, spent a lot of time thinking about how attractive young Voldemort was.

I don't see why you'd do that, when:

Gryffindor - Arrogant, self-righteous, jock assholes
Slytherin - Ambitious, treacherous, double-dealing assholes
Ravenclaw - Elitist, tryhard, head-in-the-clouds nerd assholes

Hufflepuff with its loyalty focus at least guarantees that you won't be consorting with assholes.

IIRC there was a lot of downtime that was written in the house dorms. Might have been cumbersome to write around three characters who needed to go on adventures together being constantly separated like that.
