SM64 is basically a more barren version of a Rare collectathon.

Crash Banicoot (+ Crash 2 and 3) are 2D platformers where you sometimes go forward and back instead of just left and right + up and down. I wish more 3D platformers were inspired by the Crash games tbh.

You can say that Mario 64 is structured similarly to Rare's games, but I think his movement and abilities just feel better to use than the Kongs or what have you

By far the best thing SM64 did is its controls, they are arguably the best ever in any game (the camera notwithstanding).

The game overall is massively overrated, though.

The action feels more constant in Crash, which makes it a more consistently enjoyable experience imo

Crash is certainly a better platformer than MB64. I think better game just comes down to taste tho.

Let's not get absurd now. Crash Bandicoot was always a superficial mascot for Sony, hence why they never found the need to outright buy him from Universal.

I gotta agree. Much like Ocarina of Time, I lose steam trying to play it. All the fun parts are early on, and I feel like M64's levels get lamer and lamer as you go. There isn't even any artistic cohesion in a lot of them, you just have randomly colored polygons to jump around on.

I absolutely love 64's gameplay and movement, but the overall experience is better for me in Crash.

However, I actually don't like Crash 3 that much

I never liked SM64 much honestly. It's great fun as an introduction to 3D platforming, but that's basically saying it's fun to dick around in the hub world. The actual levels are so empty.

But I'm kinda surprised to see other people think that, usually ce and the rest of the internet love it

Crash is so far beneath Mario 64, it's incredible when you realize it actually came out after it. Mario 64 was a revolution in gaming. Crash was generic 2D platforming. I liked it when it was new but when I went back and played it more recently, I was really shocked at how poor it was.
