There was that brief period during the mod revamp, where they still replied with an actual message. During that time, I got two overturns in a week.

That being said, I think most mods are fine. That doesn't make up for being wrong, though.

Mods:
Can lock topics with zero explanation or accountability.
Can uphold moderations with no explanation (The least big deal)
Give warnings to any user they don't like instead of an NKL.

This happened to me a few days ago

If a user makes it clear they're not sure of how they "broke a rule" even when they quote said rule, thus showing the staff that "yeah I read it and don't get it" the least they could do is provide an explanation. Otherwise they're opening the door for the same behavior or for the person to just silence themselves entirely.

Lol @ the mods coming into this topic to address criticism of the mod system, Gobstoppers getting super aggressive at them over "oversight" when he really means "dialogue", and continuing to fight them when this is pointed out. Caelthus even pointed out that they think the system has issues, which was met with more "moderators sitting in their ivory towers!" sabre-rattling.

Mods show up ready to actually talk about issues with the mod system, and people unload every last nitpick until no-one can actually discuss the topic at hand. Even as the mods indicate they're keen to discuss the issue, it becomes one or two user's responsibility to lionize themselves until nothing gets done.

Anyway - this is absolutely a one step forward, two steps back sort of deal. The group-voting idea is pretty good, but without necessitating a response, all that does is strip a previously given moderator responsibility away and leave users in the dark when they're driven to dispute their moderations.

It would be cool if we could get some more mod input on the new system, and maybe work out where TC supposedly went wrong. I don't think he's usually the shitposting type.

You could always make a topic on Hellhole about it. Ive had a lot of luck there when it comes to being insulted and dismissed by mods or having my topic closed with no response at all.

Mods have way too much control over the conversation on these boards, with no way for the average user to reasonably push back. Any one mod can delete any opinion they dislike by calling it "offensive," all their mod buddies will uphold against a dispute (without providing any justification), and if you try to call them out, they mod you again because you're not "following the rules."

You never see who voted on the dispute, how many voted which way, or even who modded you in the first place. Personally, I believe I've been the victim of a moderator with a pet issue more than once in the past. I'd love to see names attached

I can almost guarantee you this wouldn't work. In my experience, when someone complains they're being targeted, their moderations have always been by different moderators.

Revealing names wouldn't be a problem for me. But it would just make the usual complainers jump through more mental hoops to complain how they're being targetted by one mod.

That being said, the dispute system is infinitely better than the old one at catching mistakes since more people what's been moderated. I do feel that the split votes upheld and overturns should come with a comment, but that's for Allen to decide how he wants the dispute system to evolve.

Hey, I only saw the article, Boyega clarified it later on in a tweet. That doesn't mean it should have been modded when the issue was resolved in the topic.

It would be a small step in the right direction. If a mod knows his/her name will be attached to a low-quality moderation, maybe he or she will be less likely to pull the trigger because they're spiteful (which is what mods do ninety-nine percent of the time).

Its not entirely fool proof, man, come on. Ive been hit with moderations that made no sense and they came with harsh penalties. In fact, my most recent suspension the reason they gave was that they moderated me for the complete opposite of what my post was clearly saying.

Im glad youve had good luck avoiding mod abuse/negligence but that doesnt mean no one is ever hit by it.

There's a whole lot of groupthink going on and not just among the mod staff. I've been blocked by some accounts that I've never interacted with and we don't even go on the same boards, but the blacklists spread.

I mean I got modded for posting flat out facts.

Oh yeah. It used to be Obama for me and now it's Omar. If I post a quote from her the quote is considered "out of context" which uh....no, it wasn't, but that's really just the mod's personal disagreement with me, not something that should get a warning on a clean history.

There is at least one mod who will now hold a clean history against you because he thinks you're "gaming the system" in having a clean history, like how dare you XD

Definitely, to this day willythemailboy remains a gold mine. He had some comments recently that nailed it.

9 times out of 10 I think the mod takes it personally because they were the ones personally responsible for the questionable deletions. And it makes sense. The most biased and out of line moderations would tend to come with the most biased and out of line comment-making. They probably think moderating a video game website for opinions is "saving the world" or whatever. There's a lot of bias.

Theres definitely ways to get modded when you follow the rules lol. Posting a differing political opinion, proving a mod wrong, being Jewish, not bad mouthing the president and posting videos of goats are all off limits despite not actually breaking any rules.

Yeah, disputes have been like that for a while. The only time you ever get a response in the dispute form now, is if you lose your dispute privileges through grievous abuse of the system. It even states when you go to dispute that you will not get a response for any reason, as well.

Which struck me as an open and communicative comment. And I feel like Caelthus' comments after this one were made in good faith, too - even when the topic started getting derailed.

I'm not trying to be a nuthugger here - I saw this post and I thought it was constructive and respectful of the topic, and the only thing that came from that correspondance before I made my initial post is that Gobstoppers and a similarly minded user tried to chase that one helpful mod up a tree over a bunch of self-righteous "who watches the watchers" horse crap.

This bugged me because it lowered the chance of TC getting a response to his query from someone who was equipped and willing to discuss it. Dude had a legitimate query and was chill about it, as opposed to the usual suspects making threads like "I guess it's WRONG to post FACTS now!" when they were moderated for something like posting a "Michelle Obama is Transgender" conspiracy video. I thought it was stupid that other users would try to waste TC's opportunity on a bunch of self-lionizing bigger picture stuff that's all about them.

LightningAce is a cool guy, and it was just fucking annoying to see users overrun his thread like that.
