The Dark Souls formulae is about as old as the ubisoft formulae at this point and this is coming from someone who has dark souls 1 as one of my favorite games ever made

I dont understand how wasting time is considered hardcore and awesome.

Like in Hollow Knight when you die you have to go on a 10 minute journey through an area youve already cleared to get back to the boss that keeps killing you in 10 seconds because youre still trying to figure him out, and because that path back may be difficult you could die along the way and lose all the money youve spent hours earning.

How is this a challenge and not just a pointless time waster?

I would go so far as to say, with the exception of boss fights, the difficulty curve between checkpoints should be flat or even descending.

Overall needs to increase, of course, but if you're mindlessly breezing through minutes' worth of game over and over because of a difficulty spike before a checkpoint, that's just frustrating and stupid.

The heck are you on about? 2000s are when things started getting codified into being easy by default. Ninja Gaiden was a standout, but Nintendo Hard died with the SNES, up until the indie/retro revival.

By definition, if you're having a hard time of it, it's a challenge. You're not having fun with it, but that doesn't negate what a challenge is.

By definition, if you're having a hard time of it, it's a challenge. You're not having fun with it, but that doesn't negate what a challenge is.


To me a challenge is a game presenting a difficult situation im meant to use what I have to overcome.

Having to do things over that ive already done is not a challenge, its poor game design.

Of course, the only thing a modern gamer cares about is being able to say "look mommy I have nine hundred and fifty trillion billion hours on my save file, this game is great" even when nine hundred and fifty trillion billion minus one of those hours were miserable.

If I had the interest id point out the specific times in the game where it could easily happen, but I dont.

I beat the game, I love the game but it is NOT without its flaws. You get the Dream Gate near the end of the game when you dont even need it anymore.

pretty much. and even when its being tossed around like a misnomer its really just representative of how dark souls adn bloodborne grabbed the zeitgeist of unforgiving games by the nuts over the last decade

its an enormously influential series so naturally people are going to call back to it
