But the speed limit isn't universal?

It changes, usually fairly often.

Closest thing I've seen to a "universal" speed limit is, 80+ mph is almost universally considered reckless driving

Germans have a large, storied history of transporting large amounts of people as quickly as possible. They're very proud of it.

Actually, there are parts of Texas with speed limits as high as 85 mph.

unpopular opinion:

freedom, like democracy, is a hollow propagandistic phrase. the freest and most democratic countries have no need to advertise it as part of their branding; they let the truth shine

It's about maximizing freedom. You cant murder somebody because it aggregately reduces freedom...you gain the freedom to murder somebody but the people who get murdered lose all their freedoms, so aggregately freedoms are reduced if murder becomes a freedom.

Most people misunderstand this and therefore make fun of the concept of freedom and those who want to maximize it.

There is no point in speed limits. Most people drive at speeds they are comfortable at. We have a HIGHWAY in my city with a speed limit of 30mph. Asinine.

Let's not mention having the largest incarceration rate per capita, including people in prison for victimless crimes and drug use.

iirc my city has an ordinance where the speed limit adjusts to the speed of traffic

but traffic is really, really bad during rush hour, and so the speed limit has been reduced by like 5-10 mph on otherwise perfectly decent roads - and they've also become a magnet for speed traps

We shouldn't rely on politicians to make life better for us. The fact that most Americans do is part of why things are sliding. If the average person is educated to rely on themselves and the resources and tools they know they have access to rather than the government then things would get much better. However, too many people are not even aware of how capable they are as individuals, and part of the reason for that is the fact that more and more so children's brains are being developed in a manner that makes them think that only politicians and government can make their lives better, which is both wrong and a scary direction for society to develop.

Yeah but politicians are the only ones with the power to actually change laws though

Uh they literally fucking do though. You're taking a lot of risk if your goals aren't supported by laws and policies. You can easily end up arrested, sued, homeless, dead, etc.

I'm sure a gay man in a Sharia nation would feel a lot more comfortable living his life if the law didn't say he should be executed.

There are always extreme examples that don't apply. So fair enough. But my advice is still good when applied to most situations.
