In Star Trek they can make anything from a replicator. Food, toys, jewelry, clothes, electronics, etc. It is like a super 3D printer.

Thing is, we already have goods that can be endlessly made and they aren't cheaper for it.
Digital games and music have no expense to replicate but musicians get upset and want napster closed down despite having millions already. Same with video game companies.

Infact, digital copies of games are more expensive than physical typically despite 0 overhead.

So why would we get to freely replicate stuff if we can't do that already.
Sorry Gene Rodenberry, don't think your utopia ever gonna be.

the economy of the Federation is post scarcity though, eliminating the need for currency altogether. they have essentially limitless ability to generate power, and have fully mastered the relationships between matter and energy

plus you can't really compare digital copies to the kind of wholesale energy-to-matter stuff that a replicator does

As far as I know, you can't replicate gold-pressed latinum. There will always be something we lie and kill over.

Doesn't matter.
Someone created the object they replicate.
Say someone designs a bike.
Should the designer not get credit for his design in some form?
This is greed and it will always exist.

Basically people would replicate iphones and apple wouldn't like that. They made iphone, they deserve to be rich!

Every example that you mentioned is created by hundreds if not thousands of people.

I initially was thinking that people would still be motivated to design and create for the prestige, and the tail that goes with it. However, holodecks will eliminate any drive to attract the top tier bang material.

The technology involved in that show would almost certainly lead to a completely sedentary, hedonistic and ultimately doomed species. Eh. Ill take it.

I don't believe recording a song takes thousanda of people.
But lets look at a game.

A game comes out on NES. It does well. It makes a ton of money. The people who made it get paid for many yeara. NES becomes obsolete. No more printings of said game.

20 years later it is sold in the virtual console store from Nintendo.
Nintendo gets upset that people are distributing said game for free. They deserve their cut!

But they have done no new work? Replicating it is trivial.

South park did this best with the war between the otter people and all those filthy savages that don't use their perfectly good tummies to eat on.
