For rice I tend to do a more scooping motion unless the rice is sticky and you can pick them up that way. I don't know if I know how to "properly" use them.

I have no problem using them to pick up regular things like sushi and strips of meat and vegetables. For rice I tend to do a more scooping motion unless the rice is sticky and you can pick them up that way. For noodles I tend to also scoop and suck 'em up.
